Kirby Dach, Montreal Canadien

Because if ever you wanted to 'trade' him, salary matters if you haven't noticed. Did we even get 1 FA year?
?

I'm not even sure what your angle is.

The whole thing about getting Dach is a risk in of itself. He's a high draft pick that hasn't worked out yet. Our options about whether we can trade him in the future are borderline irrelevant.

If he works out and becomes a real #2/#3 center, his contract is irrelevant because he'll have value and we won't have any difficulty trading him. If he doesn't work out & he doesn't get better, it's also irrelevant because teams aren't going to be lining up to trade for him even if his contract is better.

There's literally no downside to this contract. None whatsoever.

If he doesn't become good, he's overpaid, if he does, we have to pay him as a UFA. I don't see the upside, except if he becomes elite this season or next and we get him on the cheap for 3-4 years, but it seems unlikely.
The Habs will be bad for a few years yet. So this gives them time to see if dach turns into something.

Worst case. If he is good but asks too much money you trade him.

Pretty much this. Exactly.

There is always some market for a 6'4 former top 3 pick center.

Good gamble for the Habs.

If this works out, his salary is predictable instead of jumping in 2 years (and potentially a bargain for the Habs.)

When you want to know the real info about heights, go check the NHL's Central Scouting's information on the player. They give you the real height just prior to the draft.

They have Dach listed at 6'3 & a half. So if he grew half an inch since then, he'd be 6'4". He's 6'3 & a half at the very least.
