I would love to get Hagens in the draft but would be equally pumped for Shaefer, definite top pairing D, or a Martone, a top line winger.

Based on nothing legit I am scared that Martone is gonna bust

Trades are also possible, can't only bank on drafting to fill out the team.

exactly, there are ways to rebuild, draft, trade and UFA. You might not be able to do all three, but you cannot rely solely on one.

Teams don't just trade good winners. we always get the middling kind. We need three potent lines so that our bottom six can win us games.

UFA is when you are down to needing only one. Maybe two if it's a good ufa year. Habs aren't there yet.

They should trade from strength and that's picks and certain prospects that won't fit the rebuild.

not deliberately, the belief amongst a significant portion of the fan base though is lose until you can win a cup (not just compete), trades and UFA do not fit into that model

That's a given but when you're drafting high? Need to supplement it with the draft.
