Leaf Rumours

Or they're showcasing Gunnarsson and playing everyone else as they would normally.

Burke obviously has some trade irons in the fire, and he's been clear that he's willing to take on other teams "bad" contracts for a talented player.

Grabo + Gunnar = ?

Grabo will be back before the trade deadline I believe, and the emergence of Bozak makes him more or less redundant going forward.

Burke has a habit of trading multiple pieces for an elite talent.

I don't think he's ever traded away an elite talent, and I don't think Kaberle will be the first one. If he can sell Gunner as a young, blossoming top 4 defender though, and tag on Grabo with another mid level or expiring asset, and bring in a legit top 6 forward...then playing the hell out of Gunner right now makes a world of sense.

Because if they're trying to drive Kaberle out of town, I don't think that's necessary. If they approached Tomas with a decent situation to go to, I don't think he says no to it, and playing him 17 minutes a night does nothing to improve his value either.

I want Backes.

I mentioned Backes earlier tonight in the GDT, I could easily see Burke going after him for a number of reasons.

1) at 25 he's in the same age bracket as the rest of our core.

2) fits the mold of a prototypical Brian Burke power forward....6"2, 215....and uses every ounce of it.

3) has demonstraded 30 goal upside.

4) he's America.

5) STL has been trying to move him all season, so he may come relatively cheap.

6) @ 2.5 million per, he fits into our cap situation pefectly.

7) personally I think he'd be the perfect type of winger to put on Kadri's wing for his rookie year.

8) Burke and Wilson are both farmiliar with him, having selected him for the 2010 US Olympic team.

Move Grabo out......and you're left with 7.5 million to add a first line winger.

Calgary didn't go to two cup finals in a row and win one.

Why would Pitt trade a core player. Makes no sense.

You can't count on other GM's making astronomical mistakes. Doesn't happen too often.

I don't think it's a mistake for them.

They're not gonna win with what they have this year. They're just not. There are a few other teams that should be able to blow them out of the water.

They're trotting out the two best centers in the game on their first two lines, and then they have Staal playing in a checking role. Meanwhile, they're so thin at every other skating position, it's not even funny. They need to make a serious depth trade or they're likely going out in the second round.

Grabo could fill in for Staal on the third line, Poni gives them a scorer on the wing, Mitchell provides them with some bottom 6 depth, and Gunnar is proving himself to be a pretty good player at both ends of the ice. Three of the players are 25 or younger, so they're not losing in terms of youth, and each of those three players has potentially some good upside still.

They can give whatever reasons they want in Calgary. Maybe some of the other issues (like Phaneuf's attitude, his money, etc.) played a part, but they wanted to make a depth trade, giving up an underperforming, but elite, talent, for a few lesser talents who would collectively provide Calgary with more power.

Let's face it, Staal isn't being used anywhere near his max capabilities over there. He's providing good checking and decent scoring.

Grabo would be providing pretty much the offense Staal gives them. Mitchell would provide the checking. Gunnar provides D, and Poni gives them an option for Crosby and Malkin to pass to.

No matter how you want to look at it, they'd be adding more to their team with these four players than they are getting with Staal.

i think if the penguins were to trade staal (which in my opinion, is likely), they'll want an elite winger in return. the problem with them right now, obviously, is that all their talent is up the middle, so i'm sure they'll be looking to change that. With that said, leafs don't exactly have the pieces pittsburgh would want for staal, so let's stop talking about it please.

They aren't trading Staal. It is a mistake for them, no matter how you try to rationalize otherwise.

You are hoping, not educated guessing.

Can't build a team on hope.

I know so. You can't wait around for something that will never happen.

And getting the Pens to trade Staal for depth will never happen.

There aren't even rumours about Staal. You are just pulling a hope and a prayer out of your ass.

More power to you I guess. Just hope you don't actually expect it.

Go look at their wingers and defencemen. They ain't winning with that.

They have strength down the middle and nowhere else.

This is a classic case of needing to trade some of their strength (and Staal is the only center they'd trade) to shore up all their other areas.

The 4 for 1 I'm proposing is not as outlandish as you want to believe. Those are all good role players. Poni is a 25 goal scorer, Grabo is a 50 point scorer, Mitchell is a good 4th liner, and Gunnar is in his rookie season on pace for 30 points and a +24 on this rollercoaster team.

That's a pretty sizable return of experience and youth for a guy they're not maximizing on their third line.

You could have said that last year too.

You don't need depth on wings when you have depth down the middle likke that. You can fill the holes with cheap guys like Sykora, Fedotenko, Guerin, Statan, etc every year, and pick up guys like Poni every year at the deadline.

Don't need to trade Staal for depth.

They have already proven that.

Sherro is no dummy. He learned from one of the best.

All the potential UFA's that could change teams by the deadline.
