Leaf Rumours

The Leafs need to bring back Grabovski simply on the basis of his awesome tattoo:

Jason Blake=Grabovski, hmmm, that isn't really at that bad a comparison. They both wheel around, and when you are doing all that whirling and twirling, it must be really tough to see the other guys, you are too busy looking for a guy who could club you.

Grabo, was a blackhole during the regular season, no question. And Kadri after his magnificent run, had a bit of a black hole thingy going too, or was I the only one to notice that. I am a huge Kadri fan, but he went so far downhill in all departments, so suddenly, I thought booze or injury. Nothing else explains why a guy goes from superstar to dud so fast.

All my contacts aren't really up on the habits of the players, so I don't know, but me, personally? I am worried a bit about relying too much on Kadri.

I wouldn't know, I played more like a Kadri extra lite, mean, chippy, vicious with a great stick. Not the best skater, never knew what I knew now, about how to tape your feet and ankles to become a great skater with the organicsteroid TRICK.

- Kadri definitely hit a wall, it screams either injury or his endurance level is piss poor. The kid has mad skill and grit, I was never a huge Kadri fan before but he's won me over.

I never understood why Burke got rid of a big/skilled guy in Stalberg for a small little ballerina in Versteeg, it still to this day blows my mind. Stalberg would fit amazingly well here in Carlyle's dump/chase/forecheck system, plus he's a UFA and we could sign him to something like a 2/5.5M deal plus bonuses.
The Stalberg trade has actually worked out well for the Leafs though.

As the center piece to get Versteeg, Stalberg was expected to be better than this. He's expected to be a top 6 forward, even Bobby Mac picked Stalberg as the 'dark horse' for the Calder that year. As it turns out, Stalberg is a bonafide 3rd liner who can step into 2nd line role temporarily only. Stalberg finished the short season on 15G 40Pts pace (over 82 games). Useful player, but hardly someone you kick yourself for trading.

Versteeg was eventually traded to Philly for 1st and 3rd, and the 1st becomes Stuart Percy. While still in development, Percy is the captain of the OHL team and had 45 points in 68 games. Dido and Paradis, the other 2 players sent to Chicago in the Versteeg deal, are officially busts. So it shakes down to Stalberg for Percy.

When you are trading prospects you are obviously always trading for potential, but as of today any GM would rather have Percy than Stalberg.

I would go $5 million for Lecavalier (based on the assumption that Grabs and Bozak will be doneso), and I really tend to think that that will be the highest offer he will receive. Teams just don't have much cap room right now and with the uncertainty of the cap from year to year and the presence of compliance buyouts reminding GM's about the mistakes of yester-years, I doubt a GM will be able to offer the guy another stupid contract. Especially since he is no longer the all-world centre that he used to be.

But having said that, I don't think that will be the deciding factor for him. I have no doubt the Leafs will have a competitive offer but it all comes down to where he wants to play.

Can't use a compliance buyout on Grabo after the 5th though.

Yup, that's what makes it tricky. Pretty much need to tamper and get a feel for what he will do later this week otherwise we roll the dice. It could still be done since dealing Grabs isn't out of the realm of possibility.

I dunno, I want Vinny on this team, but I'm not in love with giving him a huge deal for long term.

6 years is a ton, isn't it? It's tough to believe he has more than 3 very good years left.

I understand that other teams may step in with 5 or 6 years, but I think 5 is the absolute most I'd be willing to go. And $6M when he just cashed in $32M is tough to swallow.

$5M for 5 years seems like an abundantly fair deal, no matter who gives it to him.

I was thinking yesterday about some possible trades to potentially move into the top 10.

When Schneider got dealt to NJ, the tv guys were saying that the Oilers were shocked because they'd offered their first (which was higher) plus two other picks. Clearly they're desperate for a goalie.

I wonder if we ought to try to capitalize on their desperation, while taking a risk of our own.

Clearly, the Bernier/Reimer tandem is not going to be a happy one. Bernier said he was miserable in LA, and Reimer clearly was upset that he isn't the undisputed number one going into next season.

Reimer is signed for pretty cheap, and is coming off a pretty awesome season with some playoff experience. I'm wondering if they'd be interested in dealing for Reimer, and whether we could pry loose someone who underperformed pretty badly for them last year and maybe could be bought low right now. That'd be RNH.

I wonder if a package with Reimer and a few other good players might be enough to make them do something stupid.

They're fine with Dubnyk. I don't doubt they want to have a second really good option cause it's playoffs or bust next year, but they wouldn't give you RNH for ten Reimer's.

Not for ten Reimers, but how about Reimer, Liles, Colborne, Percy, and Finn?

We know they want defense, and here they'd have one NHLer signed, and two first tier defense prospects, to go along with Colborne who could step in and play center.
