Guys in the organization who believed he had that ability would since feel vindicated and would probably lobby hard to bring him back.

I don't know if Florida would look to add a centre right now. Weiss is starting to live up to his billing, Reinprecht is playing out of his mind, and Frolik is their prized prospect.

Their top scoring wingers, aside from Horton is Olesz & Stillman tied with 13 points. Getting a solid top 6 winger locked up for a few more years on a reasonable deal might appeal to them.

If we wanted to move Grabo, I don't think he would be hard to move, but I don't think Florida is a fit.

Peter Mueller was almost traded to the New York Rangers, but the two sides couldn't agree on who the Rangers would send back, the New York Post reports.

And Mueller was also almost traded to the Toronto Maple Leafs, but the Leafs didn't have enough assets to send back the Phoenix, the Ottawa Sun writes. That said, there may be more offers coming for Mueller, and Phoenix might finally be able to work something out.

The Rangers wanted to send minor league defenseman Bobby Sanquinetti to the Coyotes, but Phoenix wanted either Brandon Dubinsky or Ryan Callahan -- and GM Glen Sather stalled. It could still happen, but it doesn't appear Sather's going to give in.

This would've been the Rangers' attempt at finding a scorer, while it would've been the Coyotes' way of getting rid of a problem player. Mueller is reportedly not fitting in well with new Coyotes coach Dave Tippett, so he was a candidate to be on the move, ESPN.com's Pierre LeBrun reported.

Another possible trade has him going to the Vancouver Canucks for Shane O'Brien, who has also been on the block. This is according to the Hockey Insider.

LeBrun added on CBC's Hockey Night in America that he didn't think management wanted to dump Mueller but his poor relationship with Tippett might push GM Don Maloney to pull the trigger if a deal is offered.

The Leafs have plenty to offer Phoenix for an underachiever like Mueller.



The Philadelphia Flyers might be dangling center Jeff Carter in the trade market.

As one league executive told the Ottawa Sun, "They aren't the type of team that sits idly by." We saw that when coach John Stevens was fired, and we may see more moves coming soon.

One move we might also see is a trade for a goalie. In a previous item, we told you they are looking at Marty Turco. Another rumor around the league is that they are looking at Tampa Bay's Mike Smith in exchange for a forward.

The exact move they will make is unclear, but it's likely they'll pull something off before the Christmas roster freeze.

Would people still do Kaberle for Carter?
 
No interest in Mueller at all.

Still really like Carter, but don't think I can part with an 80 point defender for him. If he's being offered, we should really be looking into what else they might take for him.
 
I don't think they'd be looking for Kaberle anyway. I'm assuming they want a goalie, and a winger, in that order.

If they're looking to move Carter, I could easily see them getting Vokoun + for him.

Something like Vokoun + Reinprecht for Carter.
 
and I've got interest in Muelller....just not enough if they're asking for a player the calibre of Dubinsky or Callahan.

MCKENZIE: NHL SCOUTS FLOCKING TO VIEW GREYHOUNDS' MUZZIN

We've been witness to many free-agent feeding frenzies in U.S. college hockey in recent years, where multiple NHL teams, with an NHL contract in hand, chase a late-blooming player who has gone from suspect to prospect.

But it rarely, if ever, happens in much younger major junior hockey, although that is precisely what is going on right now.

Sault Ste. Marie Greyhound overage defenceman Jake Muzzin is the rarest of birds - a major junior free agent who is playing well enough to have lots of NHL teams following his every move in the hope of getting his name on a contract when the junior season ends.

Muzzin, the Woodstock, Ont., native who turns 21 in February, was a first-round OHL pick in 2005 by the Greyhounds and was drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins 141st overall in 2007, so it's not like he's an unknown quantity.

But the 6-foot-2, 216 pound blueliner was one of those kids who looked as though, in large part because of injury, he might have missed his window of opportunity for professional hockey.

Shortly after being drafted by the Greyhounds in 2005, Muzzin was diagnosed with a bad back that required season ending surgery. He didn't play a single OHL game as a 16 year old and, in fact, only played 37 in the 2006-07 season. The Penguins saw enough to take a flier on him with the 141st pick in the 2007 NHL draft.

But in the ensuing two seasons, Muzzin didn't do enough to justify a contract offer. When he wasn't chosen in the 2009 NHL draft, he became an unrestricted free agent.

Now, though, as NHL scouts flock to view the Greyhounds' 2010 draft eligibles - defenceman Brock Beukeboom and Brandon Archibald - many have come away talking about the soon to be 21 year old with nine goals and 38 points (in 32 games) who leads his team in scoring. Only Windsor's Cam Fowler has more points amongst OHL defencemen than Muzzin, who ranks 20th in overall OHL scoring this season.

''He's been great,'' one NHL scout told TSN. ''There are a lot of teams who would sign him on the spot right now.''

''He's probably going to get traded to a contender between now and the trade deadline,'' said another scout. ''So he's either going to get on a better team and really take off and generate even more excitement or he'll end up with fewer minutes on a good team and the fever might cool a bit. But he's playing well and there's huge interest in him. Everyone seems to be chasing him.''

The New York Rangers might fire GM Glen Sather tomorrow, if the Rangers lose tonight against the New York Islanders.

This is according to Craig Carton on WFAN with Boomer Esiason, who said the source is "very reliable," (via Hendrick's Hockey).

There has long been talk of Sather being fired, but the Rangers' recent struggles might push chairman James Dolan to make the change, given that they are last in the Atlantic Division after Wednesday's loss to the Islanders.

It's funny, of all the horrible offseasons Sather has had, he might get fired after one of his best in years. He signed Gaborik which has turned out to be a great move, Prospal is second on the team in scoring with 27 pts in 33 gms and he was somehow able to get Montreal to take Gomez.
 
Torts and Redden apparently got into it as well, and Redden was a healthy scratch today.

As Lundqvist goes so do the Rags, and he hasn't been scorching hot (or really hot at all) since his unbelievable start to the season.

And while Gabby has produced, del Zotto has cooled off and they really only have one good line, with very shoddy d that gets bailed out by Henrik.

and higgins -- jesus, what happened to that guy?

those wellwood vs. higgins arguments, in retrospect, are just damn funny. it's amazing how those two paralleled one another, first in terms of giving their respective fan bases hope that they could develop into high scoring forwards after some fairly gaudy totals (given their age). and both have flamed out and are basically no longer quality nhl'ers by 25-26.

Yeah because he's been horrible every other offseason.

He does look brilliant somehow dumping Gomez and replacing his salary with Gaborik's.

In the end though, too many horrific contracts hurting the Rangers.
 
That Redden deal is murder...just flat out useless. He would have been much, much better off signing 2 defence first slugs to clear the net and block shots to accentuate his strength in net.

If he gets fired, it will be for signing Gomez, Drury, Redden, & Roszival to ridiculous deals.
 
Gaborik might just be the best player outside the top 3 of Ovechkin, Crosby, Malkin.

His numbers even prior to this year were scary good. The only concern about him was health. Very good signing by Slats.

But ya, the rest of that team is pretty medicore with the exception of Lundqvist.
 
The thing about the Gaborik move, is that Slats was just doing what he always does. I don't think he was trying to be clever, or finally got it or anything like that.

He just needs to have a shinny, expensive, new toy every year.

Really, he is just lucky that Gaborik was the cream of the crop this year and not a Gomez, Holik or Redden.

It worked out this time, but his odds aren't good.
