The Chicago Blackhawks might have to deal Patrick Sharp to get his trio of Patrick Kane, Jonathan Toews and Duncan Keith under contract.

There are rumors that the Toronto Maple Leafs want in on Sharp, as they try to boost their offense. The Leafs biggest asset is their ability to take on salaries without having to send some back -- which is exactly what the Hawks need.

Also, the Atlanta Thrashers might also be interested. The writer known as Forklift from Hockee Night suggests the possibility of trading Sharp to Atlanta for Slava Kozlov, who is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. As Chicago Now writes, "If Forklift, who has steadily shot down Sharp trade rumors in the past with a gruff get-lost idiot, is getting involved in possible scenarios, Sharp could be next to gone."

The idea of trading Sharp was first brought up by CBC Sport's Elliotte Friedman, and now Chicago Now writes, "Depending on what they get in return, the Blackhawks might have to consider that trading Sharp's $3.9 million salary cap hit (through 2011-12) and his lone power-play goal (tallied way, way back on Oct. 3) could move them forward."

Despite all this talk, Sharp told the Chicago Daily Herald he doesn't want to go anywhere. "I love Chicago and I want to be here, but it's part of the game, part of professional sports," he said.

I don't know if I like the idea of spending 4 mill on another 2nd liner.

How are we going to trade for Sharp without sending any salary their way, exactly...? We have no good picks for the next 2 years.

Maybe for a couple of Marlies? I bet Tlusty goes....Zeke will shit himself.

We do not at all have that ability any longer. Not unless he do something to rid ourselves of Toskala, or Finger.

We would definitely have to send salary back, but we could manage to send back impending UFA's to even up for the year.

I kinda like Sharp though. If we get him for a song, why not? He's a legit top 6 forward.

But I don't want him if it prevents us from going after Marleau or Kovy.

Burkie needs to be really on top of the cap considerations on any move for Sharp.

Blackhawks Update

With the Chicago Blackhawks set to announce long-term extensions for Jonathan Toews, Patrick Kane and Duncan Keith at 2 p.m. (CT) on Thursday, there is much speculation they will have to make a move to free up "tagging room" (salary cap room for next season) before they can make the extensions officials.

While that is a possibility – some think Brent Sopel and his $2.33 million salary could be traded or waived at a moment's notice tomorrow – it doesn't appear to be an absolute necessity.

As we reported more than a week ago, the Blackhawks likely have just enough "tagging room" right now to fit in the three extensions. But to do so would leave the Blackhawks in a ridiculously tight position in terms of making any future moves. So tight, in fact, that they may be totally hamstrung in terms of bringing in any player who is under contract for next season.

For example, what if one of the Hawks' netminders – Cristobal Huet or Antti Niemi – went down with an injury? The Hawks would normally call up No. 3 man Corey Crawford, but he's under contract for next season and it's not inconceivable that the Hawks would not be able to make that move. In the bigger picture, with the Hawks being a Stanley Cup contender if not a mid-season favourite at this point, Chicago wants to have some flexibility to add a player at the trade deadline.

So whether it's before tomorrow's contract announcements or sometime after the fact, the Blackhawks are expected to move a current roster player who is under contract next season. Sopel continues to be the most logical choice to move, but it's not an absolute necessity to get it done in the next number of hours.

It could happen, but it's not imperative. Not yet anyway.

i highly doubt you see Sharp moved tomorrow. It's most likely Sopel.

Also, LOL at calling him dime a dozen. He would be the 2nd best leaf forward by a mile. Thirdly, there are plenty teams that would pay the premium to get him. He will not be a dump

I'd guess that the hawks would most want expiring impending UFA contracts back.

I think Sharp replaces a lot of the offense that Antropov brought. I'm not going to argue that he is significantly better than Hagman, Poni, or Stajan, but he only makes $1.4 million more thatn Shitniak. He's a guy who can pot 30, play in all situations, play the point on the PP, pretty much do what Stempniak tries to, but actually be good at it.

I'd definitely take him.
