Leaf Rumours

Well considering that Burke wanted to trade Kaberle for Kessel and a first I'm not sure that Kaberle + 2011 first + 2010 second for Kessel makes much sense.

And from Boston's perspective, I couldn't imagine them trading more than the Leafs' 2010 first to get Kaberle (if they'd even do that). Unless they'd do Kaberle + BOS 2010 first.

So the trade would shake out as

Kaberle + TOR 2011 1st + TOR 2010 2nd for Kessel + BOS 2010 1st

Which would be quite good for a young, rebuilding team... but maybe a pipe dream.

I think he said that if Kabs came and asked to go, he'd accept a list from him with no less than 10 teams. So that Kabs couldn't tie his hands and name just a couple of teams and agree to waive only for them.

He said he's not going to ask Kaberle to waive his NTC, BUT when they miss the playoffs he can move him in the summer, because the NTC vanishes, and if Kaberle, like last year, wanted to retain some control he'd accept a list of 10 teams.

I don't think so, 101.

If the NTC lifts in the offseason, Burke will trade him to whatever team that he gets the best return from.

Burke was specifically talking about the deadline and whether he'd be trading Kabs then. And in that context he said he would only if Kabs requested it, and only if he gave him a list of at least 10 teams.

In the event that they do deal Kaberle hopefully they'd take a good long look at Zidlicky, who will be one of the better value UFA signings this summer.

An underrated offensive defender who will probably sign for dollars in the same neighbourhood as Kaberle's last contract ($4mn).

He isn't as good as Kaberle but if we're talking about the next best thing he's right up there.

Last year Kabs didn't request a trade.

He submitted a list of 10 teams to retain control, because he lost it in the summer. Burke said the same thing could happen this year if Kabby wanted to submit a list to retain some control, because he might lose it again in the summer.

Thats what he said.

Pittsburgh in on Poni?

I'd say he'd be a perfect fit for that team - he's exactly the kind of two-way big fast top-6 winger they need, and that can play on Malkin's wing.

I'll take their 1st rounder for him.

This deadline could be hilarious - all of our "crappy 3rd liners" will suddenly be quality top-6 forwards on cup contenders....Stajan with the Devs, Poni with the Pens.

forget travis, id rather suffer with pat zajac than stajan.

Yeah for all the talent Pittsburgh's PP is 2nd worst in the league ... mind boggling isn't it? ;)

Anyways, on Poni ... if there are 2 guys I'd like to keep it's Poni and Stajan, but no doubt Poni will (ok, SHOULD) have a market. Poni is a very useful and very under-rated player. Poni will not fetch what Kunitz fetch, but I really consider them very similar player ... except Poni is better defensively.

Heck, ALL Toronto players are underrated these days with the team doing so poorly these few years ... no wonder it's so tough to make trades.

Anyways, for the right price, I really want to keep Stajan and Poni on the team. Stajan is one who I think will sign a hometown deal with the Leafs (local boy, drafted by the team and played here all his career). Bozak has been good the past 3 games but it's still too early to crown him the #2 center ... same for Kadri ... heck for all the people penciling Kadri into 1st line center he hasn't played a single NHL game yet.

We want a transition plan, and Stajan, a good 2-way 60-70Pts center, will fill the hole until Kadri and Bozak (if those 2 are the guys) become ready. And if his deal is reasonable, he can be moved after, or he can be a very good #3 center.

I'll gladly drive Grabo to the airport though.

The confusion at draft day with boston is what eventually set up the kessel deal and this pawn shop deal

Kaberle excepted the boston deal in the summer and would have no qualms now !

Deal would break in the end being

Kabs tor 2011 1st and second for kessel and salary dump

Why would Burke have wanted to give up Kabs instead of what he thought was a mid 1st rounder in 2010?

Interesting comparison:

07-08

Jokinen: 82gms, 34gls, 71pts, -19, 19:54 (82gms, 34gls, 71pts, -19)
Antropov: 72gms, 26gls, 56pts, +10, 20:07 (82gms, 30gls, 64pts, +11)

08-09

Jokinen: 78gms, 29gls, 57pts, -12, 18:53 (82gms, 30gls, 60pts, -13)
Antropov: 81gms, 28gls, 59pts, -14, 17:11 (82gms, 28gls, 60pts, -14)

Trade Return:

Jokinen: 1st Round Pick, C M.Lombardi, W B.Prust
Antropov: 2nd Round Pick

09-10

Jokinen: 47gms, 9gls, 30pts, +2, 18:47 (82gms, 16gls, 52pts, +4)
Antropov: 42gms, 11gls, 36pts, +14, 18:19 (82gms, 22gls, 70pts, +27)

Jokinen's history was working for him and Antropov's wasn't.

Thats just a reality that can't be ignored. Jokinen has been a legit ppg, 1st line center, and Antropov has been a ridiculed, injured secondary player.

Unfortunate, but just the way it is.

No, I think Burke got as good a deal as he could for Antropov, because of 1. Antropov's rep and 2. Toronto's rep.

Talking to a lot of hockey fans (who aren't Leafs fans) they actually thought Antropov wasn't worth a 2nd rounder, and many preferred to get Carcillo over antropov at the trade deadline ... that's STUPID, of course, but unfortunately that's also the general perspective outside of Toronto.

It's only after a year they are finally acknowledging the fact Antropov is a top 6 center ... still, many think he's getting points because of Kovalchuk.

And to add to that, Jokinen's always been an over-rated player, Antropov an under-rated player. That's why they fetch such different returns.

But gosh, I wish we'd kept Antropov.

Me too.

Who was the player we picked with the 2nd? Kenny Ryan?

I'd take Nik over having him for 4 years/$4m per in a heartbeat.
