Leaf Rumours

I think there is only one way you can get Staal out of pitts... and that is Kaberle.

Kaberle replaces Gonchar for next year.

I bet you see Kaberle for Staal and Pitts 2nd (Burke will want the first but wont get it.)

Also .... I would be looking at more of a package like a poni and kaberle , for Staal, a 1st and a second this year and another 2nd next year (if they resign poni ) or else a third. we could also take on some money from them.

Have to admit, I'd be willing to take a good look at that deal. I just really hate to trade Kabs, if he wants out I might just do it, but if he really does want to stay, I probably wouldn't.

When are we allowed to start discussing extension with him? Because that's the kind of deal you make in the summer if he privately tells you that he would like to test free agency, or if his contract demands are outside of what you'd want to pay for him.

I'd have to ask Kabs to waive now if Pitts would trade Staal and a 1st for Kabs and Poni.

Just let him play out the year next year and then bring him back.

Never seems to work out that way though.

If we traded him now, in my opinion he'd end up re-upping with the Pens or someone else. A year and a half with another organization can change a players view about where they would like to play pretty easily.

Thomas and his wife like Canada, they are not all that keen on the US. Pittsburgh would be a great team for him to display his talents on though.

He'd help them repeat for sure. They still need help up front. thats why they would need poni as well.

I think a Schenn for Staal deal makes sense for both teams, and is fairly close in value to work with only minor adjustments.

Staal has way more value around the league then Schenn.

THis deal may have been closer prior to the beginning of the year, but not now.

I still don't want to trade Schenn, even if Staal, plus I can't really see the Pens going for it.

I'm just curious if we have anyone (or combination of assets) that will land us a first round pick. Hopefully this year the market will favour us in terms of picks, like a couple years.

I still can't believe we got more for Treebitch than we did for Antropov

Trading Schenn now would be a big mistake. He has a ton of upside. Granted Staal does too. But I'd rather actually trade Kabs if we could get Staal and the 1st and keep Schenn. There's 10 years of difference between Kabs and Schenn. And if we really want to, I think we could re-sign Kabby as a UFA.

I'm happy with Schenn as a cornerstone moving forward, especially now that he's displaying the offensive upside that I continually implored doubters to be patient with respect to waiting for. He'll never be a world-beater or challenge for the goal-scoring title at his position, but if he gives you a solid 30-35 points with his defensive potential, Schenn will be a player worthy of Team Canada discussion at major international events (hell, he played in the Worlds as a rookie).

Dorklund:

Kovalchuk heading to Toronto?

I had a long discussion with a person who has been around the NHL for 30 plus years. I asked him what he thought of this season's finest drama, "The Ilya Kovalchuk Story."? This person, who convenes and communicates with maybe more scouts, players, coaches, gms and owners than anyone I know, was very matter or fact. I love talking to tried-and-true-old-time hockey guys. They say it exactly as they see it.

"Burkie will get him." my source replied to my question. "With all that is going on in Toronto, with Burkie and Willy headed up team USA, and the pressure from the teachers, they will get him. It's also what Kovalchuk wants. The Spotlight. to be on the big stage."

"Is it?" I asked, "I thought Ilya was ok being out of the limelight to a degree"

"Oh No," my source replied, " Russians, and he in particular, they want to be 'the Guy.' They want the stage....and the Leafs have the money. They have been saving it for this. The Leafs don't have 'the guy' yet. and they need one immediately. It is coming from above Burkie."

"What a about Kessel, can't he be 'the guy'"

"Kessel is a great player, but he is an American...The Leafs have never done that and Kessel is good to great, but not enough. The Leafs do have a history of Europeans and Russians being big players for them..but it is different for Americans."

"Isn't there a great irony with Burkie being the Gm of the Maple Leafs at such a critical time in Canadian Hockey, while also being GM of the Americans."

"It would be a problem for 90% of Gms. But Burkie doesn't care. He adores that juxtaposition. Yet he knows that he must get Kovalchuk tied up long term. And what better way to soften the blow going into the Olympics...The fact that there are no Leafs on Team Canada, while there are two Leafs (Kessel and Komisarek) on Team USA, as well as Brian and Ron...Brian knows the Leafs need to make the splash going into these games.. They will get him. I would almost call it a given"

Well, now we know for sure he won't be a Leaf. Thanks Ek!

If Schenn was JUST as good as he is right now, but drafted in the third round, he would be fighting for AHL ice time. Anyone who doesn't see that, doesn't see a whole lot.

He has a great first pass, but FAWK, everyone in the NHL should have that. And the reason he has it, is because he is Luke Richardson in his first ten seasons, can't skate more than two strides without panicking and freaking.

And Ilya is great, but Toronto, the city would probably ruin him. It does that to our best athletes. We dote, fawn and pander way too much for these people.

So get with the program and trade him, if you get a good offer. Mats Sundin he ain't. Or Wendel, or Vince or anything all that great. He is just another Jeff Ware. Nothing LESS, nothing more.

Very interesting. It seems like Kovalchuk is asking for a ridiculous amount of money, but he is a franchise player. Kessel's very good, but probably not a franchise player, and if Ilya wants to be in the spotlight, that would help our chances of landing him immensely.

Except for the fact that the guy Eklund was talking to was actually LeafofFaith.
