Leaf Rumours

yeah, you can't be a GM calling every week like some stalker girlfriend asking teams "so I still have Poni, hey he scored again this week" so what are we doing here?"

You throw stuff out early, and nearer the deadline teams look around and as long as they know those guys could be had, they will call. If you are calling them all the time, they will just try to take advantage.

Second, I am wondering if what they are saying about Stajan is true, and that he would like to remain with a paycut, I go to Stajan and say, I agree to pay you this much for this long.. however!! Go and be a rental to a team who may need you for a playoff run. If you want to come back then these are the terms. If you don't, I will understand, but I gotta build up the cupboards first.

Stajan would be a solid second line centre. Trade him, Poni, Grabs, Hags etc for 2nd round picks each or so. and then in the off season resign Poni, and Stajan as second line centre and wingers.

BUT GET SOMETHING FOR THEM NOW.
Is a second or third round pick really that important, if you plan to keep a homegrown guy who is willing to play for a discount? If Burke is interested in re-signing him at a discount, as I very much would be, then just keep him and re-sign him.

As for trading Stajan as a rental and have him re-signed in the summer. Well, anything's possible, but keep in mind while we all like to play the fantasy GM games, or make trades in NHL10, fact is these guys are people, with families, and with emotion. As a GM, you can hope to re-sign a player that you trade away at the trade deadline on July 1st, there is no guarantee that player will re-sign with you. The minute you trade a player away, especially a youngish player, you realize there's a moderate to high chance he'll trade all 30 teams the same on July 1st, and look at your offer no different than other offers.

So if we REALLY want Stajan, we should take advantage of his low market value right now and re-sign him now to a basement contract. You trade him, and your chance of having him back in your lineup next October is as good as the 29 other teams out there.

But if you're neutral on Stajan, and don't think it's a big loss even if he goes to another team then sure, trade him.

It's exactly for reasons of family, emotion, etc. that we should employ this strategy with Stajan and Poni. Stajan is a Toronto boy who wants to stay, while Poni has integrated himself into the city as much as possible (years in TO, wife and kids, Canadian citizen). These guys will want to return, and they're not the types that are gonna be locked up by the team we trade them to before July 1. I think if they know they'll be welcomed back, they'll treat the two months away as a brief and fun experience, going on a playoff run and possibly winning the Cup.

We're in bad spot right now, needing draft picks in a big way. We really do have to trade them at all costs for the highest return. If they don't re-sign in the offseason, that's the risk we run.

But right now, we should be maximizing our assets and (later) pushing to re-sign these two guys. Just like what happened with Antropov, except with him returning after, as he should've (stupid Burke).

If we can have our cake and eat it too, we should at least try.

Worst case scenario, we want them back but they go with another team. Then we have Kadri and Stalberg play in their spots.

And maybe those draft picks turn into good young players for us.

Well, they take up different spots.

In an ideal world, you really want BOTH Stajan and Kadri down the middle, and you want both Poni and Stalberg on the wing.

You can't pencil in Kadri on your 1st line center for opening game next season. That's too much pressure for a young kid, and he isn't ready yet. Ideally you want to start Kadri on the 3rd line, give him some minutes in all , situation, and move him up during the coarse of a season.

Which is why you need Stajan - a person who can fill in on your 1st / 2nd line till Kadri is ready. He's a good team guy, he understands and he won't feel bad when he gets sent to the 3rd line ... and Stajan on 3rd line is pretty darn good.

I can see Kadri, Bozak, Stajan down the middle at the end of next season.

Same idea with Poni - Stalberg.

I'd be a lot more reluctant to see Stajan go than Poni though.

I think you're ignoring some realities, though, 17.

Grabo is already signed for the next couple of years, whether you like it or not. And his trade value is nonexistent at the moment and likely for this season.

Stajan and Poni can get us something now, AND we may well get them back later IF Burke wants them. Right now, the worst case scenario plan is Grabs-Kadri-Bozak down the middle next year. That's just fine for Kadri's development, if it needs to be that way.

If Stajan comes back, then they have to figure something out. And they also won't have room to bring in a top center, if the opportunity presents itself.

I agree, ideally we should have Stajan-Kadri and Poni-Stalberg. I'd love that. But we have to juggle our assets properly. Right now we should trade those two and get something back. In the offseason, if we can re-sign them, fantastic. If we do, then we have to probably find a new home for Grabo. And then we have our Stajan-Kadri situation set. But it takes some maneuvering, which I'm not sure is possible.

Poni should be an easier one though, given that he plays the wing and we're much thinner there. He should be welcomed back.

With Stajan, it's gonna be a numbers game.

And I'd rather have Poni than Stajan personally, but I like both.

Truth be told, you trade whoever you can, for whatever you can.

This team is in dire need of another top-line forward. Since it is impossible to predict whether that player can be signed in the offseason - we need to put the assets together to allow for a trade and/or the ability to trade up in the draft (again...).

Or even just to use the picks.

Stastny came out of the second round. And huge talents like Zetterberg and Kaberle were way later.

You never know when you get a gem. And right now, we have to take the risk that these two don't return to us if we want them back in July.

That line up sucks, what is there to love? Not exactly what I would call driving fear into our opponents.

I never said that should be our lineup, or meant to imply that that should be our depth chart.

Just that I would like to see Stajan, Poni, Stalberg, and Kadri all in the lineup next year.

And hopefully Kovy or Marleau....etc.

Neither Ott or Armstrong are going to sign with a league-worst team to play on their 4th line... and with what they'll be asking in contract demands $2.5-3mil/season we shouldn't be looking to sign such expensive guys to play under 10 minutes per game.

$5M for those two guys is well worth having them on the team, and we can afford it.

And 4th line schmorth line. With Wilson, there really wouldn't be one, as everyone other than Kessel will be getting more than his fair share of 3rd and 4th line duties.

If that's Kovy at $10M a year, yeah, we'd have to.

But if it's Marleau at $6M or $7M, I definitely want to bring those two guys in.

Those two are must haves for me, as I think our bottom lines have been one of the biggest reasons we have been so shitty this year.

This would really, really solidify them.

How's it a waste of money to add quality players like Ott and Armstrong to the bottom lines?

You prefer to pay Mayers $1.7M or Wallin $1M than to pay Ott and Armstrong $2.5M each?

I prefer to pay Stalberg/Bozak/Hanson/Orr/Mitchell/Rosehill/Deveaux/Didomenico/Mitchell/Stefanovich/Foster/whoever less than a mil each to play on my bottom lines.

I want to spend to the max. I'm not trying to save money for MLSE here.

And we can squeeze in those contracts along with the big money player.

I would infinitely prefer Ott and Armstrong to Mitchell and Deveaux.
