Leaf Rumours

Don't know how I feel about that. Lecavailer is awesome, and I'd love to have him here, but I think I'd rather have Phaneuf.

That's interesting stuff. Not sure I believe it, though.

Normally I would agree but this particular guy called what went on with Lecavalier last year. He has connections to the Lecavalier family apparently. He also says that there is a deal in place to ship Lecavalier out once the new owner takes over. We'll see.

I doubt he makes it to July 1.

I just don't see why he'd want to leave, to make make an extra $3-$4 mill.

I bet he'll sign a 4 year $20 mill deal, and stay in Pitt, and try to win a few more cups.

Pitt is his best chance to win.

I really don't know about this Lecavalier rumor.

In both the trades Burke paid a major price for, the players coming back our way have been under 25.

And even in the UFA signings, all the major pieces he signed are under 30.

Lecavalier is turning 31 soon and I don't believe Burke sees him as a cornerstone in the rebuilding plan.

I really don't think Pitts is that strong anymore.

They've got very, very little beyond their handful of name players.

If Gonchar wants to win Cups, he'll go to Washington.

Washington can't afford him.

And Pitt is just as strong as they were last year, which was strong enough.

You aren't going to get a better chance than playing with Crosby and Malkin.

They ain't exactly lighting the world on fire this year. There are a number of stronger teams.

I don't think the path to Stanley runs through Pittsburgh with the roster they have now.

Any time you have two guys who can put up some of the best playoffs in a decade on one team, you are one of the most dangerous teams.

Gonchar is done in Pittsburgh when is contract is up. They will replace him with Goligoski and Letang.

They aren't runaway favorites, but I'm saying if you want to sign somewhere to win, you sign with the team has a 22 and 23 year old who are two of the 3 best players in the game, and two of the most talented players to ever play.

Minus the fact that it's a huge downgrade. Just look at their record with Gonchar out (and that pair in) over the past two seasons. The winning percentages are night and day -- something like .750 vs .500.

If they lose Gonchar they have to replace him. Letang is a nice jack of all trades sorts -- he's responsible, smart with the puck, can move it effectively and play the powerplay. And Goligoski is basically a PP specialist. Both are talented, but neither are top notch puck movers.

They need somebody who can skate the puck out of the zone and move it efficiently to Crosby/Malkin while playing 25 minutes per game. Whether it's Kaberle, signing Zidlicky or Niedermayer, or making a play for Timonen they would have to bring somebody aboard.

Whoever thinks Gonchar will take considerably less to stick with pittsburgh is off their rocker. There is no doubt in my mind he will go to the highest bidder this offseason or at the very least one of the highest bidders.

Realistically, i know i would switch companies for 10k. Would you leave 2+ million just for the sake of winning a cup? Its a nice novel thought that you would but in reality we are a greedy species.

Pittsburgh is a team that simply needs to continue drafting complimentary players (nothing too risky), playing just well enough to secure a playoff spot and absolutely load up for a playoff run. You'll see it year after year.

In terms of Gonchar, he'll be signing his retirement contract which as of now can still pay him like a start player but have a structured cap-hit to make the Pens happy.

If people are going on about Phaneuf's 6.5 million salary, what would they say about Lecavalier's?

Lecavalier's contract is a killer.

He won't sign a so-called 'retirement contract.'

A four year deal will take him to aged 40.

And I think that, with teams seeing how damn important he is to Pittsburgh (arguably equally as important as either of the two big guns), he might even get the same money on a 3 year deal as he would on a 4 year deal.

And don't mention the Pronger deal. That contract was just some skeezy bullshit to keep his cap hit down, but it won't work with Gonchar because he'll be over 35 (Pronger was 34 when he re-upped with Philly). So a team can't sign Gonchar to a front loaded 6 year deal with the intention of him retiring before it expires, because if he does the deal will continue to count against the cap for its duration.
