Leaf Rumours

Lecavalier is intriguing, but if it was a choice between picking up either Phaneuf or Lecavalier, I'm glad we went with Phaneuf. Phaneuf is six years younger, four million dollars cheaper and overall just fits in better with the rebuild going forward. And that Lecavalier contract is just a killer, especially if he continues performing at the sub-PPG pace he's been scoring at the past couple of years.

As for this never-ending Kaberle/Staal talk, I've said it before, and I'll say it again: KEEP KABERLE. I don't think people appreciate how rare a puck-moving defenseman of his callibre is, and how much our offense will be hurt without him back there. Jordan Staal's a nice player and all, but his impact on the team's offense will not approach Kaberle's (hell, Kaberle's even out-scoring him this season, and has out-scored him every year that he's been in the league except for last year's injury-plagued season). It would also be disappointing to trade Kaberle when a Kaberle/Phaneuf duo on the power-play looks so good on paper.

How much for a banner ad habsy? I won't put the laser on it. We can't keep em stock anyways. Usually a nice problem to have, but not when people are sick and cranky.

But how much? I will get another company there. for ya. Unless you have a relationship with dodge trucks.

Dreger is suggest it's possible Toronto and Edmonton are talking trades, in which Toronto would take Edmonton's bad contracts for picks.

He suggests a Moreau + picks for Exelby trade is possible. Moreau, at 34, has 2 more yrs on his contract for $2.5M and $1.7M. Exelby's $1.7M contract expires in a couple months, and Edmonton can still trade Exelby for a 4th or 5th rounder if they want to.

Toronto would take possibly a 2nd rounder with Moreau's contract. It is believed Burke sees Moreau as a good leader and a nice fit on the 4th line.

Exelby didn't sit out the 3rd period for no reason last night. Expect something to go down today.

I like Moreau. But I'm a little weary of Vet bottom 6 forwards on big contract, like Mayers and Primeau. They stop giving bottom 6 efforts when they get old and paid.

That said, if they are willing to send him to the minors if he doesn't work out then its worth it.

Moreau-Hanson-Sjostrom on paper is a solid 3rd line.

Wow, no thanks. If we're going to pick up a 4th liner getting paid $4.2M over the next two seasons, we'd better get more back than a second round pick. Though I guess if it's Edmonton's own pick, it will be between 31-35th overall, so that's not bad.

And we could always bury Moreau in the AHL, though Burke's shown a total unwillingness to do that kind of thing so far.

I think at this point, we definitely need to stockpile for picks, and a $4.2M over 2 yrs contract for the 31st or 32 pick isn't bad.

And Moreau isn't totally useless ... he'll basically replace Primeau's role.

Here's exactly what Dreger said for the record:

Alexei Ponikarovsky survived the first trade tsunami, but its unlikely he'll be able to dodge the next wave. Ponikarovsky attracts a lot of attention from teams interested in his size and offensive ability, and although he wasn't needed to swing either of the weekends trades, it is very likely he will be used to beef up Toronto's draft cupboard.

Veteran defenceman, Garnet Exelby's and shifty forward, Lee Stempniak's names can also be found in the out-box, however if Burke is able to move both, neither is expected to fetch the same return.

For Ponikarovsky, at worst, the Leafs are hoping for a 2nd round draft pick.

NHL sources say the Edmonton Oilers are pushing hard to move out bodies. For example, the Maple Leafs would likely move either Exelby or Stempniak for Oilers captain Ethan Moreau, if Edmonton throws in a draft pick to soothe the pain of swallowing Moreau's contract which includes another year at $1.75 million and a $2 million cap hit.

Toronto is a team capable and willing to take on salary, but whether it's Ethan Moreau or another teams cap crisis, the Maple Leafs won't accept the burden without added incentive.

I love Kaberle as well, but it doesn't seem Wilson and Burke agree... he had the second lowest ice time last night... he was paired with Gunnarson and not Phaneuf. I don't think they had much PP time as well (phaneuf for fighting)

I also found it interesting that when all the head office guys were asked what they need the most, it was a stud defenseman.

A package of Poni and KAbs could get you something pretty darn good.

Names mentioned in the GDT

Carter
Staal
Vinny
Miko Koivu
Bergeron
Krejci

Didnt Waddell tell Kovalchuks agent he wasnt allowed to talk to possible trade partners in order to discuss a contract extention?
I am pretty sure I read that here or heard in on TSN. He is making life hard on himself if thats the case with whatever return he might get for Kovy.

Kaberle + Poni + ? ? would land Kovalchuk?

Kadri?
Schenn?

? ?

The reports are the originally Waddel wanted 5 full players, young as well. He then had nobody nibble so apparently he is asking for 3 young and nhl ready players.

Kaberle Poni and Grabs... do it do it do it.

I guess we shouldnt doubt Burkie's ability to swing such a deal should we?
I really dont think a deal like this gets done unless there is a Kadri or Schenn involved. Unless of course, the Trashers fire Waddell and hire Sutter.

They aren't trading for Kovalchuk.

If you believe the rumours he isn't signing until July 1 so he can get a max deal.

No I agree.... I don't think Burke trades for Kovy.. but those reports seem to be true that Waddel went from 5 players to 3 and even with that price knock down, he really only has Boston and LA as the two teams interested in paying that price.

LA... Johnson, Frolov, + schenn?? or another roster player??
Boston: Their first round pick, (which Waddel probably wants ours) Wideman, (rumoured elsewhere) + ??

I just hope every team in the off season doesn't have the cap space, and we bury a guy like Moreau (if we get him) Finger.. trade Grabs, bring up Kads, Trade Kaberle and Poni for a centre and then have exactly 8 million or so left over and sign Kovy for that.

Heh. If Chiarelli doesn't want to budge on that, then maybe he just needs to wait another month. Boston's only three spots ahead of us in the standings, in 25th place.

Wow, possibly two lottery picks.

Not sure which they thought was more unlikely at the time of the Kessel trade - us finishing bottom 5 or them finishing bottom 5.
