Leaf Rumours

I don't think you guys realize how bad Mueller has been since his one good rookie year near 2 years ago.

Grabo's nothing special, but he looks like at minimum an affordable 50pt young centre, and there's no guarantees Mueller ever gets to that level again.

there's plenty of sense in that trade.

Not for us there isn't.

We should use Grabo in a package to get someone better than Mueller, who is looking like a total bust.

Straight up for him is a waste of Grabs as an asset.

Not a Leaf rumour but Bobby Mac is saying on twitter that Waddell told Kovalchuk he can expect to be traded within days.

Boston, NY, NYR, Philly, Calgary, Chicago and LA all talking. And Darren Dreger is tweeting that the Thrashers already have one firm offer on the table.

I bet you its LA with that offer, they already tried to get Whitney from Carolina but balked cause he wants an extension and they have a plethora of young players.

I hope it's one of Boston or Chicago simply because that would mean he's almost certainly going to be hitting the UFA market this summer.

Exactly, although I could see Boston moving contracts to Atlanta to make room to resign him.

in Chicago, there's zero chance of them resigning him.

Boston getting him frightens me actually...

1st (ours of theirs) + Bergeron/Krejci + Rask + Ryder for Kovy with extension

I can't see Atlanta being against taking salaries back in a Kovy deal to get pieces they want going forward, they have 35 million in capspace available this summer and you never want to be in the position of overpaying people just to make the cap floor.

They spent on Chara....and Chiarelli is going to be in full on job saving mode this summer. If the Bruins are bad again next year, after locking up Savard & Thomas to long term extensions into their greybeard years, I can see a change of management being made next year.

Chia has to make something happen, and he has a ton of expiring 2011 contracts, high upside kids and high picks to do it with.

The question is whether Kovalchuk will sign anything but a max extension before July 1st. If he's got his head set on testing free agency to go after max money, Boston might (but shouldn't) balk.

Atlanta probably dives head first into an offer including Rask and Bergeron with Boston's 1st. Chia would be smart to attach Ryder to that trade as well just to try to even up caphit next year as much as possible (Ryder + Bergeron + Rask = 10.0 million next year, with both Bergeron & Ryder expiring at the end of the year)

That would be a high price to pay for Kovy.

Seguin (potentially), Bergeron, Rask and Ryder?

That's have to be the best return on an impending UFA ever.

I would love it if Boston traded Rask for Kovy, then lost Kovy to UFA, and we picked him up.

That'd basically amount to Raycroft for Kovalchuk.

Too good to be true?

Atlanta isn't going to get guys like that for Kovy.

They couldn't even get the 4 or 5 young pieces. 3 roster players is the rumour.

I think teams are scared of giving significant future pieces for him.

He pointed out it would be with an extension.

That said, I was picturing something more along the lines of....

1st (ours), Wheeler, Sturm, and Ryder for Kovy + filller.

Assuming Kovy is true to his word, the only teams who should be lining up for him are those with Cup aspirations right now...that should narrow the field.
I guess though, a team could be thinking about something like what the Leafs did when they gave Montreal first crack at Mats?
My feeling is Kovy's agent wants a bidding war this summer.

If Boston is still interested in Kaberle......I'd be down with..

Kaberle + Poni for our 1st and Joe Colborne.

all the more reason to keep all of phaneuf, kaberle, schenn, beauchemin and komisarek on your blueline....

For an impending UFA Kovy, I agree. Any package Atlanta lands will probably look like a beefier version of the typical structure you see in trades like these.

1st rounder + prospect/young player + 3rd liner

I'm suggesting that Boston would need Kovy locked up to give a package like that.
