Leaf Rumours

Ten teams want Ponikarovsky

As many as 10 teams are interested in trading for Alexei Ponikarovsky, TSN's Darren Dreger reports, and it will cost them at least a second-round pick. Dreger adds that it will be a trade that happens in the narrow trading window after the Olympics and before the March 3 trade deadline.

The Pittsburgh Penguins soon may be interested -- though -- because some people in the organization think he would be a nice fit with Evgeni Malkin, the Toronto Sun reports. They may be the favorites at this point, but it will be interested to see if the Leafs demand their first rounder, since they will likely be picking late in the draft. Previously, Leafs GM Brian Burke hinted that he wouldn't be able to get a first rounder for Ponikarovsky, which surprised CBC's Elliotte Friedman. But it might also be an indication that Burke has tried to finagle a first rounder out of a suitor and failed.

Another possible destination is the Atlanta Thrashers. ESPN.com's Scott Burnside writes, "Thrashers GM Don Waddell said Thursday night he'll be a buyer assuming his team stays in the hunt, and Ponikarovsky has played with Thrashers forward Nik Antropov. Hmm."
How Kaberle gets traded

The Leafs have said they won't trade Tomas Kaberle, but the Globe and Mail writes, "An offer from a contender such as the San Jose Sharks or Chicago Blackhawks could change things." With the Toronto Maple Leafs acquiring Dion Phaneuf, the buzz around league circles is that Kaberle will be traded.

Another possible landing place is Boston.

NESN's James Murphy writes, "The Bruins could be the first in line with an offer for the 31-year-old if they could move some money out themselves. Kaberle, who leads the Leafs in scoring with 43 points, is due $4.2 million next season." But Kaberle is in the last year of his deal, so the Leafs might trade him -- for draft picks. Maybe the Bruins will give the Leafs their 2010 first rounder in a cruel twist of fate.

Meanwhile, Murphy adds that the Bruins might look at Blackhawks D Cam Barker or F Patrick Sharp. It would require the Bruins to move some cap space, but Chicago needs to clear cap room so the Bruins might get a decent discount on these players in the offseason.

Kaberle is an underpaid, non-rent a player.

Good luck getting him for a Kovlchuk package.

The only trade offers that got the Leafs listening the last two years were Carter and a 1st and Kessel.

The Kaberle rumor just never dies eh? Despite Burke saying publicly he loves his 6-pack and he's not going to trade Kaberle.

As for Poni, I'm not surprised many teams want him. I hope there's a bit of a bidding war for him ... maybe if we can package him in a multi-players deal we'd get more. I can see him being an excellent fit in Pittsburgh or Atlanta. For that reason, I hope he's traded elsewhere, and we can re-sign him in the summer. If he goes to Pit or Atl, he's staying there.

Trade Kaberle to Boston for 2 of the picks we gave away for Kessel. Our #1 this year and our #2 next year.

Of course he says that, it will take an excellent offer to get Kabs. But look at what's going on with his ice time...it's pretty clear he's going to be moved. The B's for example have lost 10 games in a row now. If they're willing to put our 1st this summer back on the table for Kabs, we should think about it.

If all we get is a 2nd, I'd rather keep him.

Kaberle isn't going to be moved for certain. He'll only be moved if the Leafs get an offer comparable to what they would have dealt him for the last two years (Carter/Kessel + 1st).

If Burke was just going to trade him for whatever the best offer was he would have done it last offseason.

As for Poni, I don't want to resign him for anymore than $2.5 million. And I highly doubt he'd sign for that.

Enough spending money on 2nd liners. We finally dumped all of them, and now we're just going to commit that money to 2nd liners again? **** that.

I doubt we'd ever get fair value back for Kaberle, so we should just keep him.

Give the guy a retirement contract and a NTC at a hometown discount.

thats a more NHL ready package then what the THrashers got for Kovalchuk.

Kovalchuk is a free agent in a few months, with little chance of re signing.

Kaberle is a free agent in a year and a few months, with a high chance of re signing with whoever trades for him.

and of course...Kovalchuk put a gun to Atlanta's head. Kaberle would re sign here in a heartbeat.

I think the icetime issue is Wilson's doing...not Burke's.

Burke's never said he's not trading Kaberle......he's implying as much in his lawyer speak, but he's intentionally leaving it open ended.

If the right offer came around, they'll trade him this offseason, if a worthwhile offer doesn't come along, they'll keep him.

Keep an eye on the Bruins offering our 2nd rounder for Poni.

Chia won't be around to see these draft picks improve his club if Boston doesn't make a significant bounce back next year.

He may be directed by ownership to make sure this doesn't happen again.

It is really bizarre actually ... Kaberle's icetime was yet again 2nd last tonight. Beauch had ~ 25 min, Gunnarson had 24 min, Phaneuf 23 min, Schenn 21min. Kaberle? 17 min ... way lower than the other 4, and only Exelby (7min) had lower icetime.

The way they heavily use Gunnarson and drop Kaberle's icetime drastically is not normal. I hope Kabby has an undisclosed injury, or else the only reason you drop your team's point leader and point leading defenseman to 2nd lowest in icetime - the only one I can think of, is they want to see if they can do without Kaberle.
