Leaf Rumours

Yeah, Clarkson will probably be a Leaf. I still think we won't go into the season with these centers.. especially since they are all very very poor at faceoffs.. and after last years playoffs, I can't see them deciding to go with a worse faceoff group this year. Not that we were a bad faceoff team or anything.. but we will be bad with a 46% man replacing Bozak, that's for sure. I really think we are shopping the **** out of Grabo right now and it wouldn't surprise me if Weiss was the number 1 target. Even though I'm not completely thrilled about that, I much prefer it over Clarkson.

As far as playoff goes, sure we can improve, but let me say this ... BOS is exceptionally good in faceoff, they'd make most teams look bad at the dot.

I'd be of the mind to pass on Horton, who might get someone like Columbus to do something stupid to land him, and the overhyped overpriced Clarkson and go get someone else who would fill a similar role, is better offensively, and has almost no one talking about him in the media right now.

Ryan Clowe was a +7.5 RelCorsi last year, and even with his shit performance in SJ last year, immediately after the trade went back to his usual scoring rates with 8 points in 12 games as a Ranger. He's shown the offensively ability to slot in on either of the top 2 lines with a history of .7-.8PPG play and would provide the same type of big body board/front of the net presence that Clarkson would, but without the Canadian media hype driving up the price. Both can fight, but where Clarkson is more of a legitimate middleweight, Clowe took on and beat guys like Kassian, & Engylund in the recent past...he's more of a lower tier heavyweight when it comes to scrapping. Clowe hits more as well.

I'm all about finding potential bargains in the cap environment, and taking a guy who has been a consistent physical presence in the NHL for the last 7 years, has been relatively healthy for the last 5, and is just barely on the wrong side of 30 seems to me as a perfect opportunity to sneak in with a 3yrs x 4 million type deal and get a guy who is actually pretty likely to outscore either Clarkson or Horton next year, while providing everything they do physically or more.

If Clarkson wants to come here on a legitimate hometown discount, I don't think we should stop him from being willing to run himself through a brick wall to win games for his boyhood club, but if .5-1.0 million is what he's calling a hometown discount and there's someone out there offering him 5.5 or something stupid...pass, and take a chance on a Clowe rebound to form.

Horton is another pressure pussy that will want to play in anonymity. I see teams like Dallas or Columbus as landing spots.

Our centres being pussy soft made it worse than it should have been though. Kadri-Weiss-Bolland is much harder to play against than Bozak-Kadri-Grabo.

I simply don't understand how someone who spent their whole ****ing life becoming one of the best hockey players in the world would want to toil away where nobody gave a ****. Yes, I understand the concept of being an anonymous millionaire in a place Florida, or California....but FFS, you spent your whole life becoming one of the best in the world at your craft, surely you want someone to ****ing notice.

Bitches.

Isn't that where Leaf players go to retire anyway?

Heh.

and yeah, I fully expect Bozak to land in Calgary when all is said and done. Tyler fits their age profile, their need at centre, and their propensity for overpaying ex Leafs.

Let's say we sign those three guys. We look like:

JVR $4.25 ------ S.Weiss $4.5 ------- P.Kessel $5.4
Lupul $5.25 ---- N.Kadri $3.0? ------ D.Clarkson $4.5
Colborne $1.0 - D.Bolland $3.375 - N.Kulemin $2.8
McLaren $0.6 -- McClement $1.5 --- C.Orr $0.9
(Ashton $1.0 - D'Amigo $1.1)

Gunnar $3.0? ------- Phaneuf $6.5
Gardiner $1.1 ------- Franson $3.0?
Liles $3.875 --------- Gilbert $2.0?
(Fraser $0.8)

Reimer $1.8
Bernier $2.0?

Armstrong $1.0
Tucker $1.0

Total $65.75

And that's being pretty cheap on the RFA contracts.

So we'd definitely have to get rid of both Grabo and Liles to fit all 3 of those guys in.

You're not getting Clarkson for $4.5M. He's asking for $6M which means $5.5M is the floor for him.

Precisely.
