there have been plenty of guys who can put up points but can't play D.
franson still has not proven he can actually handle big minutes against guys who can actually play. he was as sheltered as a guy can be this year.

Well, sure no disputing that part. I just think he's better than a bottom pairing guy on most teams.
Definitely am more surprised by the Kadri doubt though. Like the Dave Bolland thing? Really?

Kadri's sample size isn't small. He has been this player every single year since we have drafted him at 3 different levels.
He's not a guy that came out of nowhere.

The guy looked like a PPG 1st liner for the first 33 games last season then fizzled out. Minus a game against Ottawa he did virtually nothing for 3 weeks.
Aside from that stretch of games his production hasn't been top-6. Unless you think a 34 point pace (as a rookie) and a 27 point pace (as a sophomore) is what a 2nd liner should be.
Like it or not, there are legitimate questions about where the guy will plateau out.

Which is why it's fair to question whether he can be a first liner, not whether he can score more points than David Bolland.

Kadri's gonna start the season on a line with Lupul and Clarkson more than likely. I really don't think it's a "legitimate question" whether he can produce like a top 6 player next year. I'm not really a gambler but I think it's a pretty safe prediction.

PPG is not a requirement for 1st liner, just a requirement for superstar
Kadri has scored at a 52pt pace for his career - high-end 2nd line production.
Kadri has scored at a 61pt pace his last two years - 1st line production.
Kadri has scored at a 75pt pace last year - elite 1st line production.

I don't understand how a 12 game slump and struggling a little bit in his first post-season action until the last two games of the series, where he stepped up in the biggest games of the series mind you, would be more important then the 3 full months of dominance he displayed. Here is Kadri's monthly split.
January - 7GP 3G 4A 7PTS +1

Just to take the kid's side for a second, if I'm not mistaken, he was playing in the AHL while the lockout was ongoing, which means that like many youngsters who play their first 82 game NHL/AHL season, they tend to hit a wall near the tail end.
Maybe that's all that happened.

Stars make 6M-9M a year though. I don't think anyone is advocating giving him that just yet.
What some are advocating though is giving him "2nd line" money over a long term (4-5M) so they don't have to pay him 6-9M if he becomes a star. If all he becomes is a 2nd liner, then a salary of 4-5M is still fair for what he would bring. The only way this salary wouldn't work out is if Kadri tops out as a 30-40 point player, which is good 3rd line production (production Kadri topped in half a season). Anything above that is top 6 production on almost every NHL team.
