Surprised nobody's brought up the Gardiner - B. Schenn trade rumour yet ...
I know, I know, it's Doug Maclean and Kypreos who brought it up so maybe it has little truth to it, but multiple sources including Bobby Mac are reporting the Flyers are desperate for a young puck-moving dman and B.Schenn is being used as trade bait.
They were eyeing Del Zotto but with Del Zotta struggling, they have targeted other young dmen in the league, including Jake Gardiner.
Burke tried to move heaven and earth to move up to 5th so he could grab Schenn, and thank God he failed, because thus far Kadri is looking better than Schenn. But Schenn still has all the raw skills to be a good #1 center. He has been playing on 40-50 points pace in his first 2 NHL seasons, which is respectable if you assume power forwards take longer to develop.
I don't see him surpassing Kadri, but Schenn has the physical game which no other Leafs center, except Gauthier in the system, has.
Schenn is also a better skater than his brother, has a NHL shot, has the willingness to get his nose dirty and score a few ugly goals. If he tops out at 50 points then obviously a Gardiner - Schenn trade will be a bad trade, but Schenn has the potential to be a 60-70 points center who will be physical and strong in 2-way plays.
Meanwhile, Gardiner you can argue is somewhat expandable with Reilly already in the NHL, and Percy still in the system.
If both players pan out, this is a trade that could potentially benefit both teams (and that's what they said of the JVR - L Schenn trade ... until L Schenn became a healthy scratch

) ... would you do it?
