I agree that I would have just drafted a goalie and kept Bernier a #1 for another year.
I don't think Babcock wants that.

Don't go counting any chickens quite yet. Andersen's numbers aren't really too far removed from Bernie and Reims. Nor has he proven himself as a full-time starter.
I get what people here are saying. My optimism is directly correlated to my trust in management in identifying a goalie. Andersen has a lot going for him. How about a high winning percentage on an offensively inept Ducks team?
I feel as though they have numbers they are looking at that we aren't seeing. 18th highest paid goalie in the league as of right now and will likely provide us with quality dependable goaltending. He's 26 years old. He's 6'4.
We weren't getting Carey Price. Ben Bishop would've likely cost more in assets along with significantly more in contract dollars. Not sure who else was available that is clear cut better than Andersen. I'd rather Andersen at this point than Fleury. I sure as hell didn't want Reimer back in net. Babcock clearly had no interest in Bernier returning as the #1 goalie.
Due to organic growth in the organization and the addition of some major prospects making the jump this team is looking much improved already.
I don't love this move but i am happy we got a quality goalie.
He has been better than Reimer and Bernier.
I'll know exactly how I feel in 2 - 3 years.
Unfortunately, the squeaky-wheelers will no doubt not be shutting up.
The Leafs should still draft a goalie.
This is clearly a move to improve the team next season, which will also help attract free agents.
Stepping back to the Kessel deal, we effectively traded Kessel and a 2016 2nd rounder -for- Andersen, Kapanen, Harrington and a 2016 3rd rounder (NJ).
Definitely happy to be adding a 6'4 Viking to the table. It will be nice to finally have a big goalie in net for once. Not happy about giving up the 30th overall pick though. That certainly has the feeling of an overpayment to it.
Andersen's numbers are pretty decent though. I'll take a .920 save percentage, like he put up last season, on the Leafs any day.
Yeah, if Shanny/Lou used the 31st pick or the 57th pick on Hart/Fitpatrick/Parsons/Sawchenko it would definitely add another layer of depth to the position in the organizational chart. Given the question marks still surrounding all of Andersen/Bernier/Sparks/Bibeau, it's hard to argue that addressing that wouldn't still be a pressing need.
