Leafs acquire Grabner from Isles.

I'm guessing Leafs get something more valuable for Grabner than anything they gave up, at the deadline

Not to mention the Boyes, Glencross and Setoguchi's of the world.

I like Grabner and he's an easy guy to deal at the deadline me thinks. Speedy, good PKer. I had high hopes for Finn, guess his development stalled and the new regime decided to move on. Nothing else I care about was dealt.

@markhmasters: Lamoriello says deal creates flexibility: "We were pretty tight on contracts & we don’t know what may become available."

Solid trade. If healthy he'll probably score 20ish goals.

Always have liked Grabners speed. With Kessel gone it'll be interesting to see where we get our goals from. Grabner has a good chance at sticking in the top 6.

Yep. In spite of the number of players involved, this deal is actually really simple.

To Islanders: $3M in salary cap flexibility
To Leafs: More contract/roster flexibility

The players themselves are pretty unimportant. Grabner was not one of the Isles top-6/7 forwards, and for a team that's trying to be competitive, $3M is too much cap space for what Grabner's contributed to the team for the past few years. On the Leafs end, if you go through the list of guys that were competing for spots, it's pretty clear that Finn, Verhaeghe & Nilsson were all probably headed to the ECHL. And then Taylor Beck's a fringy 4th line forward that would've been in really tough to crack the NHL roster, and it also wouldn't make sense to have him take a spot on the Marlies.

Like I said before, Gibson's the only one I'm a little puzzled about. Beyond Sparks and Bibeau, the Leafs don't have any other goalies in the system. And Gibson's still fairly young and had a solid season for the Marlies last year. But it's not a huge deal---I've wanted to see Sparks get a chance to get into more AHL games this year, and it looks like that's going to happen now.

The rookie tournament probably sealed the fate of a few of these prospects. Finn has been pretty shit and looked like he was destined to play in the AHL the rest of his career. Sparks looked pretty good from the 1 game i watched and from the reports i'm guessing he showed more to Hunter and co as a future NHL goalie than Gibson. Verhaeghe & Nilsson already have a very low likelihood of reaching the NHL. Beck is a 4th line guy.

Grabner if healthy will provide us with decent top 6 production and at that point will be added to one of our other assets to trade for a pick at the deadline(Think Santorelli + Franson type deal). And even if he doesn't his contract will expire at the end of the season.

In Mark Hunter i trust at this point in terms of our prospect pool.

Grabner and Boyes could each net something in the 20 G range and get ample PP time with the Leafs current crop of F.

That should pay huge dividends on deadline day when everyone and their mother is looking for a top 6 Winger

Re: Leafs Offseason Thread

terrible trade

How is it a terrible trade? Do you really think any of the prospects we gave up amount to anything? Besides Grabner likely isn't here long term and if he can get 20-25 goals he'd net a decent return at the deadline, oh and did I mention we free up 4 contracts going forward by doing this deal?

This is pretty genius really. None of the prospects mentioned were high upside guys, and they were all stuck in a log jam that would have effected their development. Grabner will be flipped for picks, and is just on the fringe of the type of you you can snag a late 1st for, if he stays health and has a 40-45+ point pace heading into the deadline.

This is sneaky good from Shanabas.

If the guys that got traded thought they had a long road to get to the NHL in the Leafs organization, imagine what they make their chances to be with the Islanders? lol

JVR-Kadri-Winnik
Lupul-Bozak-Grabner
Boyes-Matthias-Parranteau
Komarov-Holland-Glencross
Arcabello-Panik

Some decent depth there.
