Leafs acquire Grabner from Isles.

That's a solidly awful roster.
Meh. That lineup's not going to win any Stanley Cups, that's for sure.

But if Babcock runs it like a pure meritocracy and gets them playing intelligent, organized hockey, it could finish a fair bit out of the league basement.

JVR-Kadri-Winnik
Lupul-Bozak-Grabner
Boyes-Matthias-Parranteau
Komarov-Holland-Glencross
Arcabello-Panik

Some decent depth there.

Putting the cart before the horse aren't we? There's no guarantee guys like Glencross and Boyes make the team....

Right now it looks more like this....

JVR-Kadri-Grabner
Lupul-Bozak-Panik
Komarov-Holland- Parenteau
Winnik-Mathias- xxxxxxxx

Of course a lot could change between now and opening night.

I'm not sure that lineup would win the Memorial Cup, let alone the Stanley Cup.

I think this Leafs team is going to surprise a lot of people this year... by no means do I think they sniff the cup but I see them in the mix all season long for one of the WC spots.. now whether they net one is debatable but I feel it'll be a tight race.

So dumb leafman. Why would you guarantee roster spots to Glencross and Boyes? Training camp hasn't even started yet!

It bothers me that this thread subject doesn't make a pun on grabner's name, you know, the leafs "grab grabner" or something.

But seriously, have you seen how pathetic the Leafs roster is? What are the odds that solid NHLers like Boyes and Glencross don't make it?

I think Leafman has the right idea with hoping that Glencross + Boyes make the team. Its in our best interest for these guys to make the team and have good years. They have enough name value that they wouldn't be taken as a fluke if they performed well. Hopefully we squeeze a couple of teams for some early round picks.

The only way they don't make it is if the team is willing to put young guys like Nylander, Marner and Brown in there.

Otherwise their competition is guys like Panik, Spalding, Holland, Arcabello.

I honestly don't see it. BL had his bit about us being a team full of "castaways" last year....now this is a legit group of castaways. 2 guys we're even remotely likely to see on the team in 2 years, a few guys on contracts I'm sure we'd love to be rid of, and a pile of honest to goodness cast offs from other organizations.

Even if they're not flat out terrible, they will be made to be terrible in February when we trade off any thing that hasn't sucked among Boyes, Glencross, Grabner, Arcabello, JPP and whoever not named JVR & Kadri we can get value for.

The one thing that could save them is goaltending. Bernier and Reimer are capable of giving the Leafs top 10 goaltending, and if they do that they will have a chance to not finish in the basement. But it certainly wouldn't be on the backs of that forward group, or their pathetic D corp.

Just to clarify: when I say "a fair bit out of the league basement", I'm talking finishing in the 7-10 range, instead of the 1-4 range, as far as the draft goes (not taking the draft lottery into consideration). Though it's a fair point that this lineup is going to get a whole lot uglier for the last 22 games of the season, at least. That will definitely have an impact.

Winnik on the 1st line hurts my eyes.

Innik to winnik the draftpick.

As for the Grabner trade, sweet. Loved watching this guy, has killer speed which is a plus, and if he tops 20+ someone will flip us a second or so at the deadline. Moving a bunch of guys that fell into disfavour with the current regime is a bonus, especially since we'll be getting so, so many replacment guys over the next few years.

If there is any remote chance Glencross, Boyes and Setoguchi can fetch any form of a pick mid year they make the roster over a marginal kid.

And it makes all the sense in the world to keep the important kids off the team for a while

There's zero chance any of the kids like Nylander and Kapanen make the opening night roster.

And I think the Leafs would love to sign Boyes and Glencross to cheap one year deals (not sure there's any real interest in Setoguchi), but the real issue here is their getting rid of Bozak and Lupul, which thus far they haven't been able to do. I'm guessing they're trying hard every day though.

If you can't trade Bozak and Lupul, I'm not sure how Boyes and Glencross make the team.

Kadri, JVR, Holland, and Komarov aren't going anywhere. They just signed Winnik, Parenteau, Arcobello, and Matthias, so I don't think they hurt their own image by trading them before the first game. They certainly intend to have Grabner in the lineup. That's already 9 of the 12 forwards. With Bozak and Lupul, that's 11 of 12.

I could see Spaling or Panik being moved, and thereby room being made for Boyes and Glencross, but it's not ideal.
