Leafs acquire Matt Murray

I thought I read last year at some point that he was struggling badly with long covid for awhile. Idk if he's all clear now tho. He sucked before that anyway.

he's sucked for so long now it is basically impossible to rationalize.

but hey, goalies are voodoo so maybe this pays off. colour me skeptical though. and helluva fucking risk to take for MORE FUCKING CAP THAN WE WERE PAYING MRAZ. just idiotic asset management.

I think you might be able to make a case he's a decent bounce back candidate but the price tag has to reflect he's a bounce back candidate.
this is exactly where I am at. Dubie doubled down on stupid and risk instead of hedging on one. and it seems like it was completely self-inflicted. what the actual fuck.

Go bullish when everyone is bearish? High short interest means short squeeze potential?

Fuck it. Conn Smythe here we come.
this is like all that emotional fan me has left but logical brain me isn't letting me get on board. I've spent way too long mocking Murray and saying he's done etc and mocking that contract to all of a sudden do an about face cause glasses thinks... I don't even know what the fuck glasses thinks...

I think the raw stats on goalies might be a bit misleading recently. The NHL seems to love changing things that disproportionately affect goalies. I think it makes sense to use more of a comparison especially with save pct.

Still, this is a ridiculous risk when we don’t really need draft picks and could use cap space way more.

I don't love that we seemingly didn't maximize the deal terms in our favor, but guys, it's really not bad at all.

He's going to be fine. He'll be good enough to let us win, so it'll be up to the forwards, as usual.

I know it gets mocked but last years stats REALLY are misleading. Save percentage is WONKY in small samples. For 90% of his games last year he was a .920 goalie. His final 2 games, which inevitably led to him shutting down down for the year (because I believe he played injured), were absolute disasters. But for 90% of the season he was legitimately elite. The Leafs are banking on that continuing into next season. I get that and I actually don't mind it. As HL said, the cost simply has to reflect the risk though.

in the past four years, we have to basically cherry pick his best 18 game sample to give ourselves hope. not really ideal.

That's an interesting observation. Maybe save percentage would be better as a median than mean.

In fairness it's the most recent 18 game sample out of the sample of 85 games in between his last elite season. It was his best stretch of hockey since his last elite season. So banking on a bounce-back is actually smart here. I supported it. But yeah, they're paying him guaranteed 1a money so this is pretty fucking dumb.
