Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Amirov has a European assignment clause in his contract, where he has the right to go home and play in Russia if he's not on the NHL roster. Though hopefully his experience this season will sway him towards the conclusion that it'd be better to play in the AHL and y'know, actually play hockey, than be at home and not play at all.

As for bringing him over here this season, according to Josh Kloke at the Athletic, the terms of the loan agreement the Leafs made with Amirov's Russian team is that he can't play in the AHL or NHL in 2021/22 until their KHL season is finished.

Since the KHL regular season ends at the beginning of March, and their playoffs run through to to end of April, that leaves the not unrealistic possibility that Amirov just basically isn't going to play much for the rest of this season.

There has to be a clause in there for him having to play x amount of games or the agreement is nullifed.

Nothing good about this for his development

He's a localish kid (Salavat is 60-70km from Ufa) so it's a bit more complicated a decision that for a lot of Euro's. But living in Toronto making AHL money (which is probably pretty close to 19 yr old KHL money) and playing has to be better than living in a 3rd tier Russian city and not playing.

If the club isn't going to play him, we should 100% being approaching them to attempt to get them to release him from the contract.

Is there justification for them sitting him - like are there actually 12 better forwards on that team??

If not, why are they doing this?

I don't think he's just an okay prospect and I think it's similar to what we've seen over and over again with NHL coaches where they favour safe vets. Even more so really, because there's absolutely no benefit to this coach being patient with a young player in the hopes of developing him because they know he's gone next year anyway.

Oh yeah KHL coaches love vets. He's more than likely one of their top 12 guys. But he's not quite good enough to make it a no brainer. 27 point pace last year and he got decent icetime too. For his age that wasn't a bad season, mind you. Just makes it easy to pick on the kid when he isn't a stud.

He's young and is obviously still a decent enough prospect who is playing in a tough league for a coach that clearly isn't very keen on him. So it's tough to evaluate him. My evaluation is still based on his entire body of work including before he was drafted. Was never much of a fan in terms of his ceiling but as long as he can be a solid middle sixer that's all they need.

Russian teams are pretty traditionally known for not playing young players, and burying NHL prospects who they expect to leave in the relatively short future unless they're the very best players on the team

Yesss. As much as I could give a shit about the Olympic tournament, I love the WJC, but only if there are a handful of Leafs playing. More we have playing, more I’m into it.
