Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

What's everyone's updated prospect lists looking like at mid season?

1) Niemela
2) Robertson
3) Amirov
4) Knies
5) Voit
6) Holmberg
7) Steeves
8) Hirvonen
9) Rindell
10) Kral
11) Tverberg
12) Akhtyamov
13) Ovchinnikov (3rd in PPG in the top Russian jr league)
14) Peksa (probably the best goalie performance in Russian jr)
15) Duszak

Life is pretty okay when your 15th ranked prospect is a 24 yr old RHD putting up PPG in the AHL.

Temper expectations

It’s all teams top 15 , if you get 3-4 playing in the league and producing your good

It’s all about the big picture and the big picture is that we’re a team on pace for 119 points, we’ve traded first rounders away three years straight and I’d say all four of those top guys are likely NHLers in some capacity.

Don’t have any issues with this order. It’s pretty close to mine, with maybe a few slight flips. Pretty pretty good.

Yeah, I don't see any of the top 4 not making the show as full time players. How good is definitely up for discussion, but all 4 are pretty obvious future NHLers

I can't even rank them really there's a whole bunch of good ones with contradting pros and cons but similar overall. Makes it even harder that they seem to all play in different leagues.

There are so many similarly good ones that I'd even say it's a good time to use some of them in trades.

I think Knies and Hirvonen may be too low.

I’d say Knies at 3, maybe even 2 just based on what he’s showing each game. Hirvonen probably 5 or 6.

In terms of trades, I wouldn’t want to deal any of the main guys for a ufa. If it’s a really good player with at least another year on his deal then I’d be more comfortable. The lower guys, I don’t care much, they can go for free agents.

Trade any combo of them for Chychrun if he's good (still TBD; Forumice Scouting Inc. still hasn't figured this one out). But yeah for rentals, gotta choose a lesser one.

There's no way Knies has passed Robertson or Niemela. I'd hold off until we see Amirov on the Marlies in a month or so to make that call either. Hirvonen isn't exactly torching Liiga either, he's putting up a strong showing that suggests a future NHL'er could be in there. But his closest 19 yr old comparables from Liiga are Sami Kapanen, Aleksi Saarela, Goldobin, Jere Lehtonen (the obvious high point here) and Markus Granlund (not the good Granlund, the other one). It's a real mixed bag. I've got Voit's 1.36 PPG D+1 season ahead of that, and Steeves current 22 yr old PPG season in the AHL ahead of that.

The only problem is perception. We might know that we've got about a dozen excellent depth prospects after our best 4, but do other front offices around the league feel the same way? Do they give a flying fuck that Pontus Holmberg is putting up excellent age adjusted production in SHL and tracks to be a good middle 6 forward (or better) based on trajectory and comparables? Probably not. Most of the league doesn't appear to think that way. Knies though with the size and obvious skill is the one guy I could see getting over rated by the eye testers around the league. They won't stop to think why he's not torching the NCAA with those tools, they're too busy with their pants around their ankles tossing one off to his highlight videos.
