Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

That may explain Niemela over Knies on your list.

I think Knies got so much attention and has such an awesome YouTube resume, that most have started to think he's overhyped.

I'm actually starting to think he's underhyped, the more I see what he can do.

you might be the only one who believes in Knies.

maybe he makes you look like a genius!

I think Knies will be a good NHL player, and an interesting player type with good tools. The IQ is definitely questionable though, and that's a massive limitation on upside. With his tools, he should be dominating the NCAA and so far he's been good there, but hardly dominant.

I believe in numbers over YouTube highlights. Until Knies dominates the NCAA I see a middle sixer likelihood (which makes him a good prospect, just not elite). We all rank him top as a three leaf prospect so yeah.

Now Niemela isn't as toolsy and I am a lil concerned he got the zaitsev pp boost last year and it may have been an anomaly filled with luck and simply being on a good pp unit. Both are good prospects tho.

Nah, Niemela is a right shot defender who did literally historic shit in Liiga last year, a league that has produced a lot of good defenders. Knies a winger who had a mediocre season in the NCAA.

I almost always prioritize age appropriate production in professional leagues over junior leagues.
I like Niemela a lot too, but he's a smallish guy who may not be a stud at both ends of the ice. I think he could be real good, but I kind of think of his upside as a right shot Sandin, which I'll happily take.

Knies, I don't know how he'd fare on a team that didn't have the weapons up front like we do, but on our team, the way he plays, which looks almost like a bigger version of Tkachuk, playing with Matty or Tavares, I dunno, I seriously think there's 30+ goal potential in that stick, which is way more valuable than what Niemela could provide us even if he tops out. As I've said before, I distrust NCAA stats, so I really don't give a second thought to them.

That sounds great to me. Big body, nice shot, goes to the net and three years of ELC control.

Either that or exactly the attributes the ol' boys club will be drooling over for deadline acquisitions.

the general take is that he's a checking center but that's because people just look at points without looking at ice time and pp ice time.

he'll get the ice time this year, though. so if he scores this year it's not some fluke improvement it's just leafs' brass understanding numbers.

Knies seems like a pretty safe bet to be a solid NHLer. The question is his upside, which appears to be limited. But even if he is a less dirty Tom Wilson that is a great player for this team to add.

Minten we have no idea about the upside yet, but if two games are any indication it is higher. He looked pretty good playing at AHL level in preseason too.

I've seen Knies play once in that leafs scrimmage and he was horrible. Can't take anything from that but the lack of IQ that ME mentioned was obvious. He was clueless out there and always made things more difficult on himself. Reminded me of super early career jvr, so if he can be a more physical jvr that's kinda fantastic. But he's super raw and I'm not sure I see him making an impact this season.
