our AHL forwards are kinda grim. beyond Tverberg not sure there's anything there. and even Tverberg, still too early to say.

seems like a good debut season for Niemela and Villeneuve. but the AHL depth seems more gudproey than ever

It sucks that hirvonen and voit had their seasons wiped out.

But i think Steeves is probably an nhler.
Steeves needs to play in the big league at this point.

Agreed re Hirvonen and Voit though, they could both still be legit prospects.

Beyond that, we're getting into the Lajoie's and Bellows it seems.

Having Knies and Robertson on the big club, and Hirvonen, Voit, Steeves, Villeneuve, Niemela at the AHL level and Cowan and Minten in the OHL seems actually pretty good though.

Age 24: Liljegren, Holmberg, (Steeves)
Age 23: ---
Age 22: Robertson, Hildeby, (Kokkonen, Akhtyamov)

Things arguably look worse than they should because these young guys aren't exactly being given huge opportunity by the coach.

Age 21: Knies, Niemela, Tverberg, Villeneuve, (Hirvonen, Peksa, Ovchinnikov)
Age 20: Grebyonkin, Voit
Age 19: Minten, Moldenhauer, Malinoski, (Lisowsky)
Age 18: Cowan, Chadwick

This group is probably good tbh.

Its probably average ish. Which is pretty good considering they've had 2 1sts in the last 5 years and two 3 pick drafts out of the last 3.

They have only had 11 out of 21 picks in the last 3 drafts, including only 4 total in the first 3 rounds.

2024:
2nd: ROR
3rd: Gio

2023
1st: ROR
2nd: Gio
3rd: Schenn

2022:
1st: traded down
2nd: Gio
3rd: Rittich

2021
1st: Foligno
3rd: Campbell

Love Gio, but 3 high picks for a 40 year old bottom pair D with a name was kinda nuts. Our last 5 2nd round picks were Minten, Knies, Hirvonen, Robertson and Durzi. We gave up 2 of those.

Gave up two? Just Durzi.

I don't mind going for it either. Dubas just sucked at it. He always went for big name UFAs.

If you look at Colorado though, they only traded away one 1st, and it was for a full year of Kuemper.

They traded all of their 2nds between 2021 and 2024 but got:

2024: Lehkonen
2023: Manson
2022: Toews
2021: Toews

So between 2021 and 2024 the Avs traded a 1st and 4 2nds for Kuemper, Toews, Lehkonen and Manson.

Between 2021 and 2024 Dubas traded 3 1sts and 3 2nds for Foligno, ROR and Gio.

Christ.

I don't really mind them going for it every year tbh. I would've said if you're going to give up that many picks, make sure you're drafting well and I think they did.

But if you're drafting well and you don't give those young players on ELCs opportunities over underperforming vets, that's where you lose me.

I think "going for it" has to be Muzzin type trades in a capped world. If you're trading high pick and prospects that were high picks it has to be for good players (top 6/top 4) that you have some contract control over.

It can't be for Foligno's (bottom 6, expiring) types. It just fucking can't.

Wait we're missing McCabe from that analysis.

And now that Jake's at an 8gl/36pt pace with next to no PP time, he's starting to look a lot more like Muzz.

I sure have some new hope that McCabe-Brodie's struggles in the playoffs last year were more on Brodie, as opposed to McCabe not being Muzzin. Kyle may have pulled off a brilliant move there if that's the case.

It's a vicious cycle. they trade all these picks to get players their system should have produced in many cases.
