Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

We definitely have very different opinions about that guy.

My prediction is, when you guys don't get over the hump and win anything over the next couple of years, Slaf gets traded to create the shakeup needed to try something new. But I don't know if his numbers then will be what they are now. If I were the Habs, I would be looking to cash in on him asap. The other core guys are good. Him, a pretender.

A) you're clearly not looking at his numbers when he was the line driver of the 2nd line (he carried the play and Kapanen took the draws)

B) Dare I say, this is the Presto cited example of the Pronman Effect whereby you all hated this guy when he was drafted (just a big talentless lug) and are very slow to change your views despite reality. But I have hope for you next year....

IMHO, this was the impetus for Hughes to target Knies. Give the team another big body option to play with Suzy/Caufield

Slafkovsky with Caufield + Suzuki: 3.57 GF/60 56.1% xG
Slafkovskly w/o those two: 3.46 GF/60 44.5% xG
Caufield + Suzuko w/o Slaf: 4.34 GF/60, 55.2% xG

I've done nothing but lay out the actual reality mate.

He's clearly not a bum, but he's clearly the distant 3rd best player on that line, and a significant step down from the high end 1st line forwards you're comparing him to.

They had a black hole at C on the 2nd line so defensive numbers were ungood

I just compared him to Nylander at 21. You’re giving him a 0% chance of having a first line career — i’ll take that Call option

Personally, I didn't know anything about him to hate him back then. But I'm sure I laughed that they took him first overall when I think he was ranked 10th or so. I hated him once I saw him play. He is not a great player. He's propped up big time. Remove the props and he flops.

like I said, baked chips and dry chicken breasts aside, I think you are a reasonable dude so I have upmost confidence that you’ll change your mind eventually

He’ll be closer to Willie than Knies. People forget his age — 18 months younger than Knies. But my bet on the Habs isn’t really Slaf dependent and I agree he’s nowhere close to Hutson.

Yeah if their ~5th best player is a young Willy, this is a potential future dynasty. It doesn't need to happen, but would be scary if it did.

The thing about dombot numbers is that they have things like usage, linemates, shooting percentages, etc baked in.

So it rated him as the 28th best forward in hockey offensively last season, but his linemates were ranked 10th and 11th. He also is likely to get his with the SH& oiSH regression stick eventually.

Knies at 21 was far closer to Slafkovsky offensively, than Slaf was to Willy

Willy: 2.38
Slaf: 2.06
Knies: 1.98

And this is before we address the fact that Slaf is a big tap in merchant, isn't a guy who dominates the offensive end with the puck on his stick like Willy, etc, etc.

Knies and Slaf are really good comparables for each other.
 
Will is a 93 point pace guy over the last three years with consistently +++ scoring rates so I would not be confident that slaf becomes that, not many do and I would only make that bet on a handful of young guys at any given time. Willy's numbers when he was younger were fake and gay cuz he got no pp time ever despite being an excellent pp player and suppressed ice time at evens cuz not a gudpro, so I don't love that comp either.

But there's a world in which slaf can bridge some of that gap defensively since Willy is generally a disaster in that department. I don't think I like the comparison offensively at all tho.

that's what being 6'3 225lb does....now you're gilding the lilly of your own argument
 
There are many who would say that Knies is/will be better than Willy so I'd take the fuck out of that comparison. We can compromise on Knies, I think I like that one even though I think Slaf is better.
