Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Not to turn this into a Leafs subject, but it's frustrating watching the Marlies in some ways.

Because they seem to heavily lean on their most talented players regardless of age or size and they load up their PP1, play them nearly the entire 2 minutes and are successful 40+% of the time this playoffs?

Next round will be interesting. Looks like they'll face the Checkers who finished with 110 points this year to the Marlies 91 points.

I really hope they can keep him around.

Dubas won't hold him back if he gets offered a NHL job. But I also think that this big money contract extension Dubas just threw him was similar to the one Shanny tossed at Dubas when other teams started circling. We're paying you to be patient and stick around for another year Sheldon.

Buffalo is the concern. If they don't come calling or do, but pick someone else, we're in the clear.

Perhaps you've never been to Buffalo?

That's the nice part

An okay young team that is still a long way from competing, in a proper shit hole of a city that nobody cares about. It's a worse, warmer Edmonton with a low rent Connor McDavid for a franchise player. A franchise player that is becoming a coach killer of some note.

Bring keefe up as an asst. coach, put him in charge of the powerplay and penalty killing.
Have an understanding with him that if the leafs dont offer him the head coaching position by this time next season, he is free to go wherever he wants.
That way the players get to become more familiar with him and his ideas as he will with their strengths and weaknesses.

In his entire 9-year coaching career thus far, from Junior A, to the OHL and now to the AHL, Keefe's always been a head coach. So I'd pretty surprised if he ended up as an assistant coach, much less as an assistant to a veteran coach who very much runs his own show and would probably view Keefe as an unwelcome addition to his staff by the GM.

I think Keefe will either remain with the Marlies next season, or he'll take a head coaching gig somewhere else in the NHL.

The one thing we have going for us in terms of keeping Keefe is what ME alluded to in his post---the current NHL head coaching vacancies (Edmonton, Buffalo, Ottawa) are in cities that aren't particularly appealing destinations, and for organizations that are complete gong-shows at the moment. And hell, if Keefe went to Ottawa, Melnyk probably wouldn't even pay him what he's currently making in the AHL.

So if Keefe wants to be at all choosey about where he gets his first NHL shot, maybe he decides he's better served staying where he is, making good money to coach in his home town and working for a GM he has a great relationship with. And then if a better opportunity somewhere else comes up next season, or if/when Babcock inevitably flames out again in the first round next year while making a slew of idiotic lineup decisions, he'll be poised to step right into the Leaf head coaching job.

Bracco with 11 pts in 7 games.
Kind of amazing how under-the-radar Bracco's season has been this year.

Between the regular season and playoffs, he's now played 82 games for the Marlies this year, and has 24 goals & 90 points in those games.

In years past, if we had a guy putting up those kind of numbers in the AHL in their age-21 season, they'd be getting hyped as the second coming.

Also, don't forget Keefe was blacklisted from the NHL because of his relationship with Frost. Dubas was the only one that would give this guy a shot. Who knows if that stench has worn off him yet or not.

Additionally, the Leafs are going to pay him more than a lot of NHL coaches make on his new deal. Probably more than he'd make in Ottawa or Buffalo.

Regardless, he's been great in his role with the Marlies. That rate that team has produced NHL players the last few years is crazy. Keep him there as long as you can until you make a coaching change or someone else steals him

Mentioned this a few days ago but people are waiting to pounce on Keefe for it when he is promoted

Was he involved in the sexual explotation charges Frost was acquitted or was it just him being the reported ******* to the league officials and players?

As far as I'm aware, Keefe was involved in the whole shebang.

Keefe and Mike Jefferson (who later changed his name to "Mike Danton", and went to prison for trying to hire a hit-man to kill Frost) were the stars on a couple of Frost-coached Junior "A" teams, and were part of the cadre of players who were under his influence in the OHL and involved in a bunch of the off-ice stuff. Keefe was also a part of the group of players that wouldn't shake David Branch's (CHL commissioner) hand, walked out on team banquets, wouldn't stand for the anthem, etc.

So yeah, if Keefe ever becomes the Leafs' head coach, this stuff will come up---particularly from Steve Simmons, since he did a lot of reporting on the Frost stuff and tried to get Keefe to comment on it when he was hired to coach the Marlies.

I suspect it'd blow over fairly quickly, though. He's since apologized to and buried the hatchet with Branch, doesn't have any connection with Frost and has been an upstanding citizen during a coaching career that's now spanned 13 years and has obviously included a lot of success and not a bad word from anyone he's coached.

Frost was a master manipulator that’s for sure

No excuse for that Keefe and the other players were involved in but he clearly had them brainwashed
