Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Nice to see Korshkov get on the board. I like his overall game but be needs to work on his speed a little

And what more can you say about Sandin. The is the Marlies best dman and has been for a while.

I see no reason for him not to be in the opening lineup come October

All the young guys have great puck handling and skills, it's really impressive, that's the future of the Leafs with Dubas in charge.

Funny how much that stands out.

I've just gotten used to PP1 practically scampering for the bench when the other team gets the puck anytime around the one minute mark of the PP.

Will be nice if he can stay healthy and have a little bit of success in this playoff run.

He hasn't played much the past couple of years, due to a couple of major injuries and not getting a ton of ice-time when he has been in the lineup. Some confidence heading into the summer might go a long way. Definitely think he'll be a project, though. I expect the development staff are going to have to spend at least a couple of years doing a lot of work with him to see if they can turn him into something useful at the NHL level.

As for Sandin, Keefe announced after the game that Rosen's going to be out for the rest of the series. So he's going to get plenty of opportunity to continue to be the Marlies #1 defenseman and keep building his case to be in the NHL next season. He's already made a pretty damn good one.

I thought coming into the season he might be a potential 4C for us down the road.

I think next year is a little optimistic, and that if Dubas has any say, Petan will be given the first crack at that job. But Brooks has made some strides this year.
 
Bit out of left field---the Leafs have signed a 24 year-old LHD named Teemu Kivihalme to a one-year entry-level deal.

I've never heard of this guy before, but looks like he played in the USA (High school, USHL, College) from 2010-2017, and he's spent the past two seasons in the Finnish league.

Was drafted in 2013 by Nashville in the 5th round, but never signed I guess.
 
So according to some Finnish scout dude this guy is the second best Ufa d out there (wings signed the top guy in kaski.

The guy believes he's ready to step into the NHL. Could see a dermott-kivihalme bottom pair to start the year if this dude is even half decent. Seems to be a decent skating, puck moving d. Like his style more than Ozzy's.

Based on the scouting report he seems to be mobile and makes smart decisions with the puck so he fits the Dubas mold

Hard to know what to expect with these free wallets but a little internal competition never killed anyone

Yeah I certainly like the scouting report better than Ozzy's that's for sure. He'll battle it out with Rosen for the 6/7 most likely.

About 60-65% of hockey players shoot left overall. I'd theorize that there are more lhd because it is important that they use their stronger, dominant (usually right) hand to hold their stick. Probably more important than it is for a forward because they are often actively attempting to stop an offense.

Just a theory of course. Seems like the league is getting more and more lhd dominated though.
 
Does any other coach so strictly apply a “lefty LD, righty RD” lineup? I don’t recall ever hearing so much emphasis on this.

It's pretty common. Some coaches are more strict about it than others. There's some pretty sound numbers to back up the principle of d playing on their strong sides so I don't quite blame them.

But it does perhaps appear that lhd may well be a market inneficiency. A good lhd on his off-side is still better than Zaitsev, for example. It's possible that the league has gone a bit overboard on this fixation.

Rhd possibly have become overvalued and lhd undervalued. Muzzin may well have cost a hell of a lot more if he was a rhd. And I'm not sure that's entirely reasonable.
