I don't think it's an entirely Babcock thing. I'm pretty sure there are plenty of advanced stats also in support of lefty-righty pairings being optimal.Does any other coach so strictly apply a “lefty LD, righty RD” lineup? I don’t recall ever hearing so much emphasis on this.
Of course, simply having your best six defensemen dressed is more important, as well as giving your best defensemen the most playing time.
And yeah, I don't think any of the Leaf coaches we grew up with cared a whole lot about it, whether it was Burns, Quinn, Maurice, Wilson, Carlyle, etc.
