Leafs' Prospect/Marlies Discussion Thread!

Honestly, thats why everyone loves Knies, and why Toronto will too. Not the midlevel skill set and production. Well, the combo of midlevel skill and bam bam.

Yeah I don't trust euro d point totals. Mikko Lehtonen is another example of that. This Hirvonen cat looks awesome though. First legit center prospect they've had in awhile

Lehtonen wasn't even a full timer in Liiga at 19 though, nevermind being one of its best players. He didn't have his breakout year until he was 25 in the KHL. Age adjusting performance matters a lot.

Hirvonen deserves to start on the big club. 3C behind Matthews and Tavares, can’t be more sheltered than that to start out.

Oh those two aren't comparable. I wasn't comparing them. Just saying that plenty of middling talented defenders put up elite point totals in Europe and never amount to much in NA. And when I watch Niemela I'm not horny over his raw tools or anything. But production matters most and he produces so he probably doesn't matter. He's obviously a fantastic prospect.

I like them both obviously, and them not just starring but being leaders on one of the top wjc teams is nothing but good. I do think the vagaries of euro league scoring, especially how much more strict role usage is there and how PP dependant scoring can be there has maybe led to an underrating or Hirvonen and an overrating of Niemela. For example, Niemela gets top PP usage on his euro team but isn't on the top unit here at the wjc.

Whereas I'm guessing that Roni has had little PP time at all on his finnish team and I wouldn't be surprised in the least if his even strength scoring numbers were actually quite good compared to the rest of his team, even at his young age.

That being said I don't think either stay in north america this year, but I do think they're definitely in the picture next year and might not need much AHL time at all when they do come over.
