Leafs trade for Foligno

Just saw this tweet...can't copy the post from phone

Just an FYI

Goals scored since 2017-18 (Hall's MVP season):
Taylor Hall - 29
Nick Foligno - 34
Hall has never been known for staying healthy... Or goal scoring for that matter.

Losing to teams ranked higher than you 3 out of 4 years is not underachieving.

If you want to reference losing to Columbus in the fake playoffs last season, sure. But losing to championship Washington and then the elite Bruins twice in 7 game series, isn't underachieving.

Underachieving is when you lose to teams that aren't as good as you are, not when you lose to elite teams that beat you in tightly contested series.

It is underachieving

As much as your teams were ranked lower , you were in every series

An extra goal here and there and you could on won those series

They were not 4 game blowouts or teams teams clearly stacked with more talent

Bottom line , your guns never produced to expectations as a unit

If they did you would on won every first round

How many players delivered their A game when it mattered

How many game winning goals did your guns produce in deciding games

rough day for Dubas. Hall>>Foligno at cost.

hopefully this works out but it seems like a bit of a miss.

I'm not certain the Bruins will even make the playoffs this season.
I never wanted any part of Hall. If there is a guy that is all for himself and nothing for the team then that is hall.
Foligno may be in the latter stages of his career, but what he does bring to the table is a 100% work ethic every game whereas Hall might give you a few minutes a game. Maybe.
It has been a Hall M.O. for a while.
Remember when Hall was drafted and a few GMs mentioned that they would waste a pick that high on a guy that was only concerned for himself.
It's a bit pricey for Foligno, but I prefer Foligno over Hall, to be honest.
I still don't think Dubas is done..... I still think that he has a marker in his pocket for another player under the radar.

In fairness last year Tampa was the traded deadline loser for giving up 3 1sts for Goodrich and Coleman and Boston was the winner withe Kase and Ritchie.

Actually Boston wins the deadline like every year. Nash, Iginla, Jagr.

not trying to be the deadline winner.

Leafs still need a number 6/7 dman for the playoffs .... might bring in Oleksiak.
Just not Josh Manson ... please.

I don't know if it ends up being right or not but I don't mind the theory that Foligno is more valuable to the leafs against the Tampa's or Colorado's than Hall would be. And if you're fully convinced in that and truly believe it, spending more assets to get the more valuable guy is the move to make. I'd personally disagree with that and I think Hall would be more valuable but... I'm obviously not 100% on that. If dubas disagrees then I'm going to trust him.

Sometimes at the deadline it's not about bargain hunting.. it's about getting the best guy and the guy who improves your team the most. Glasses has earned the benefit of the doubt for me but if he's wrong and Foligno is trash while Hall runs a train on teams then he no doubt deserved criticism.

With that said I don't love the Rittich move either. Doesn't do much for me. If you're relying on him you're fucked in any event.

It simply comes down to this. Top guys on the Leafs have taken the next step and a couple of them seem to be impossible to contain. Dubas is seeing that, predicting that they can get him an extra goal a game in the playoffs. He is betting that with this new addition, he can essentially ask the top 6 to score enough to take a lead into the 3rd against those two teams and he has the defensive team to bring that game home.

He clearly chose Foligno over Hall. It wasn't a matter of missing out.

This isn't necessarily on Dubas, but just the idiocy of the league itself. Sounds like 6-10 teams wanted Foligno and what he brings, or what he used to bring, or what teams think they need etc but per Dreger 3 teams were serious on Hall ( i'd argue 0 were). Thats going to drive up price to not sense making levels.

Dubas wanted leaders and the guys he brought in (Jumbo/Simmonds) are probably in and out of the lineup now with Galy and Foligno pickups. Foligno gives them a legit “intangible” guy that actually has a big role on the team and fills a role they need as a complementary, tough to play against winger that can fit with the top two lines, doesn’t have to be sheltered and PK. And unlike Mikky can score a bit.

Also don’t forget we also got Gally. He’s been really good.

I agree that Galchenyuk may have changed the narrative in terms of what kind of forward you go for, but they could have addressed the bottom 6 with a much cheaper option IMO. I wont mention the number 1 name on the trade board for fear of hate, but Scott Laughton would have worked at more than half less. Dubas paid for leaderbeanery and reputation and i never figured him to be that guy

Helps that we all saw what Foligno did against Tampa a couple years ago in the playoffs. Would Hall be that impactful against them? Doubtful. Only question is whether Foligno declined significantly since then. Legit question imo.

Gally seems to have been that perfect Dubas find.
Foligno fills the hole that the Leafs needed.
Riitch ... seems to play well against the Leafs but counting on him to be the starting goalie is a bit of a stretch ... but who knows, many teams seem to have a goalie that goes nova in the playoffs ... hopefully it will be riitch.

Jack Han likes the trade:

Not only can the 2021 Leafs go toe-to-toe with any Stanley Cup contender from a skills perspective, but they now have a compelling team narrative that can make the difference between success and the failure, when everything else is equal.

The Leafs have a critical mass of players who can make elite plays.

But now they also have a critical mass of players who will die for the crest.

They acquired those players in the correct order.

If Foligno hasn't fallen off a cliff since 9 months ago then I like it too I think. Dubas targeted him and wasn't going to settle on Hall if he preferred Foligno just because he cost less. Idk if he was right about that but I've got no reason to pretend I know more than him. If he's wrong I'll bash him relentlessly of course though. Let's make that very clear.
