Whatever your definition of elite is, he’s a star player and premier shooter that produces close to a ppg.
 
Laine's lack of anything beyond the offensive zone will be his weakness.

I wouldn't re-sign Laine because the costs associated with him aren't going to be team-friendly. 28 years old and looking for a 7-8 year contract at $9.5M+ per year? Sorry, can't do it. I'm looking to get away from older, expensive players, not tie myself up to more of them.

If he wants to re-sign for 4 years? Maybe 5? Okay, I'll listen. 7-8? Nope.

It will come down to his play and what the contract is like.

I'd also explore trading him at the next deadline.

I'd trade him at deadline for another first round pick. Eat salary for a good prospect included or another first.
