Lou Lamoriello named Leaf GM

Was just listening to an interview with Ray Shero talking about how they're re-building in New Jersey. I wonder if Lou is partly thinking "you kicked me out because you didn't think I could do a rebuild? I'll show you how I can do a rebuild!". It's like TO vs NJ rebuild wars.
 
the intriguing thing is - WHO was against a complete rebuild over the last 5~7 years in NJ? The owner? Or Lou?

We tend to think Lou is old-school and he's reluctant for complete rebuild (his Devils, even in this day and age, averaged 31 years old, almost 3 years older than the league average!) ... but we tend to forget Lou came to fame as he rebuilt the Devils in 1987 when he first came into the league.

I am not sure if Lou can master a rebuild in today's NHL, but he can sure CONTRIBUTE to it as part of a team.
 
Nj's problem isn't that they haven't rebuilt it's that since the lockout they have drafted poorly.

The team managed to constantly replenish until the past few years, drafting impact players while they were a contender.

Lou knows you don't need to go in the tank to build for the future.

But you have to draft well and maybe his allegiance to Conte hurt him. Or maybe the Devils just didn't have the resources across the scouting ranks.

In terms of the Devils faltering the past two seasons though... marty got old, parise was too expensive and kovy screwed them. Not much you can do about any of that.

One good sign though is that as bad as the cLowe deal is its nowhere near Clarkson bad... and lous the guy who didn't buy the hype on Clarkson and let him walk...

One note on Marner contract: he gets the "A" bonuses. Lou Lamoriello historically does not believe in them (see Adam Larsson), but...because negotiations began before he was hired, I understand he made an exception. Be interesting to see if it continues.

What's being negotiated on these ELCs? It seems they're all three year deals for just under $1m.

Is it just the bonuses, which are fully negotiable between the parties?

Everything's negotiable, including salary. It's just that players picked as high as Marner usually get the maximum allowable (975K).

And yes, there is wide latitude on bonuses. I believe if you give all the maximum bonuses allowable, players on ELC's can make as much as $2.9M per season.

I have a feeling we're going to be seeing the Leafs do a lot of things that Lou doesn't normally do.
