New Canadian Politics Thread

I'm generally pretty progressive on most matters economic, and I don't really have a problem with the list overall. The stuff that would bug left wingers though:

- Good with an EV rebate over mandate, the economics of EV's are really fucking close to making their own argument here. The biggest issue is charging infrastructure and supply. We're not a big enough auto market to change supply, letting China in and providing a rebate is a logical next step to mass EV adoption. We live in 2026, not 2040.

- Consumer carbon tax was good policy that was massively unpopular because people are dumb and don't take climate policy seriously in Canada. I wish this could have stuck around, it was net positive for the majority of Canadians financially but yeah, we're dumb and would have voted in the Conservatives if steps like this weren't made to differentiate Carney from Trudeau. Industrial carbon pricing still exists, and is untouched. Dumb people hated their way out of their rebate cheques so that they could pay a few cents less at the pumps is all that really happened.

- Reversed capital gains hike....yeah, don't like this and it definitely could have stayed in place. I said it shortly after the election, but if Carney can't harness neo liberal economics in our benefit, no one can. Willing to give this the benefit of the doubt under the assumption that this won't just lead to broader income inequality and the money saved by our wealthy will actually find it's way invested into the country. Strong doubts here though that this is ideological more than data driven.

- Cut 40K government jobs: Don't love on the surface if it means reduced capability and services, but this gets us down to OECD average for total public service size in the mid 21% range. Lower than the nordic nations, higher than western Europe.

- Cuts to immigration: Another one that was an electoral necessity if we want to avoid a CPC government. I wish the broader public had a more nuanced view on this, but views on immigration have soured heavily over the last 4-5 years. Our immigration targets overall are still in line with pre covid immigration targets though, so this is more correcting some of the previous liberal regimes mistakes than anything else.

- Increased military spending....I mean, the nordic countries are pretty fucking liberal and have very robust militaries for their size. I don't think this is a left/right issue. Also, a significant portion of the change in spending is a math trick. Most countries in NATO have universal health care and weren't counting the health care spend of active duty & vets in their military spending. The US though, has a seperate system entirely for current and past military, which did get included in their % of GDP calculations. We've started counting our healthcare spend for military members and vets in our calculations. Our 1.2% was never really "1.2". Shitty procurement was the main reason our equipment was so out of date, not simply lack of spend.

The best outcome out of all this is Carney governing from the centre-right with a focus on repositioning Canada away from the US, a reemergence of the NDP into a strong progressive option for the left. All this would allow PP and the CONs more time for trucker parades, grifting and the Joe Rogan podcast, which seem to be their main priorities.

All I can say is for people to read his book. Partially as penance for your sins (he's a pretty dry writer), but partially to get a better insight into what he actually believes. Anyone who wants it, DM me.

I couldn’t finish it! Too dry. He’s surprisingly way better in person off the cuff
