New Canadian Politics Thread

Yeah, this dude posted a lengthy screed about this on Twitter yesterday.

On the one hand he argues that countries aren’t actually trying to steer their defense spending away from the United States, because under the glorious leadership of God Emperor Trump, more countries want to engage with the United States than ever!

And that it would be pointless to do that anyway, because the US has the bestest technology, weapons and defense industrial base, and trying to duplicate or replace it would just be a hopeless waste of time!

And then on the flipside, he threatens that access to the American defense industrial base is a “privilege” that they can revoke at any time, so countries better keep steering their increased defense spending towards the USA if they know what’s good for them!

I wonder if, in his heart of hearts, Pierre is even still hanging on to the delusion that he’ll be Canada’s next PM at this point?

Or if he’s just trying to hang onto his jobs as CPC leader & leader of the opposition and the extra pay & benefits that come with them for as long as he possibly can before he inevitably gets kicked back into the backbenches with Andrew Scheer for the rest of his career?

I also kinda lowkey expect that, once he’s out and the PM dreams are well and truly dead, his sham political arranged marriage will end in separation and divorce. So, possibly another reason he’s hanging on.

He’s never had another job so he’s just hanging on till he gets canned. That’s my guess. That and a little delusion mixed in to keep him going

Yep. That’s why I think the Scheer comparison is a good one. Like Poilievre, he was a weirdo teenage Reform Party activist who jumped straight into politics and has zero life/work experience or qualifications outside of it.

So even after he got backstabbed and turfed out as leader by his caucus in pretty humiliating fashion, he was still shameless enough to meekly return to the backbenches because he’d never get another job that even pays half as much as being an MP.

That is definitely Pierre’s future as well, presuming he can find himself a new seat that’ll prove to be as safe as Scheer’s and that the party will allow him to keep.

Also.... American military product development, procurement, and manufacturing is kind of broken. There's a reason that they're so shitty about the middle power strategy, because keeping the cost of a lot of their programs requires the economies of scale that can only come from all of their allies buying into the program as well. The F-35 never gets built due to cost per unit if the cost wasn't shared amongst allied nations. When the US goes it alone you get things like the Ford class carrier, which are impressive but prohibitively expensive to build and operate. The lifetime cost of a single Ford class carrier is about 60 billion depending on whose math you like, with a 15-20 billion dollar up front sticker price. On the worst end of it, you get the LCS program that cost 10's of billions, and delivered basically no hulls that the Navy is comfortable using for their intended purpose.
