New Canadian Politics Thread

It’s very poorly papering over in a totally inadequate way our lack of investment in aviation infrastructure over the past 40 years. Pearson isn’t big enough.

How much bigger does Pearson need to be though? It already does 47 million passengers a year. Fucking up the Islands is going to add maybe 2-3 million more a year.

Fucking upgrade Hamilton and Waterloo. Both of them are in the middle of fucking farmers fields with tons of room for new runways. Both of them can have rail connection with the Go system instead of fucking downtown Toronto up to add a few million passengers a year.

But that's kind of the point, it's not the number of passengers, it's who they are and who this move is for, isn't someone who wants to land in Hamilton or Waterloo and take a 45 minute train.

Pearson isn’t big enough for current capacity and are investing now in both terminals because demand is increasing by 30-40% in the next decade.

Hamilton and Waterloo should be upgraded but that isn’t enough. Hamilton is possible as a viable relief airport (with expropriation of surrounding lands and massive rail/infrastructure development alongside airport expansion) but Waterloo is too far away and inaccessible.

But the real answer is that Picketing should have been built 40 years ago.

Pearson's annoying in that it's a suburban airport, but there's development all around it, so I don't think it can really be extended. You could ever so slightly extend a couple of the runways, and there's probably terminal space, but yeah, it's a little boxed in. It's one of the shortest runways that can support the A380, if they ever came out with another generation that needed a longer runway Pearson would be in trouble.

The problem with Pickering, Hamilton, Waterloo is that they're all even further from Toronto. Pickering you'd have to build from scratch too, which would be very expensive.

The solution really is high speed rail. For one, that would cut down on the need for Toronto-Montreal or Toronto-Ottawa flights, if you could do either of those trips in like 2.5 hours by rail. And a legit high speed connection would actually bring KW or Hamilton into range of Toronto as well, if you could reliably get from them to downtown in like 45 minutes, that at least makes them not any worse than some airports like Newark. If KW and Hamilton suddenly are in range of Toronto with a reliable transport, then you can a lot easier justify expanding them out.

Dougie doesn't need Toronto votes to win provincially, but the Liberals do federally.

Even moreso than not needing Toronto’s votes—the foundation that the entire “Ford Nation” political brand is built on, going back to Rob & Doug’s city council days, is open hostility to the actual downtown city of Toronto and the people who live there, and seeking to govern them without their consent and in direct opposition to their wishes.

Both because the Fords did and do genuinely loathe downtown Toronto and the people who live here, but also because it’s a great way to score cheap points with suburban and rural voters.

But yeah—luckily the political calculus is completely different for the federal Liberals. They desperately need downtown Toronto, especially with a by-election coming up. And all the more important to keep us happy with the NDP ticking back up in the polls in the post-Jagmeet era. Downtown Toronto could easily turn into a monkey knife-fight between the Libs & NDP if the Libs aren’t careful.

We have massive infrastructure debt here because all levels of government have consistently neglected to do things that clearly needed to be done because of cost and the fact that the upside is several elections cycles away from being felt.

Yes, Pickering would be expensive but where else can you find the 5000 acres necessary that is closer to Toronto?

Had to look up East Gwillimbury (kinda like looking up Strathmore CA. . .😉), and had an encouraging good read. 😊
