New Canadian Politics Thread

Morneau resigns.

Resigns as an MP too, along with resigning as finance minister.

Wonder if they try to parachute Mark Carney into Morneau's riding as his replacement in both jobs. And if Carney would even be interested in the job. If he does want to enter politics, Toronto-Centre is a pretty safe riding. The Liberal MP's won every election there since 1988, most often in a blow-out.

Yeah. Carney has long been viewed as a potential Finance Minister and even a PM hopeful.

Freeland is the new finance minister, while still retaining her job as deputy PM.

Trudeau’s minister of everything.

Carney in the background sending her excel notes and whispering sweet numbers in her ear. Good test on how Freeland/Carney can work together as they should eventual be PM/FM after Justin realizes he's better suited for another line of work.

I come to this thread to be alone with my thoughts --- what is ALL THIS GODAMN NOISE ABOUT THE US POSTAL SERVICE DOING HERE!!!!!

God, that would be nice. I appreciate that he booted Harper out of politics, but I’ve had more than enough of Trudeau at this point.

And honestly, there would be no better way for Trudeau to prove his bonafides as a self-proclaimed feminist. Step aside and hands the reins to the woman that he clearly believes is the most capable member of his government.

Oh dear. I'm sure Trump will use this in his anti mail-in vote rhetoric.

Thousands of damaged ballots force delay in naming next Conservative leader.

OTTAWA -- The naming of the next leader of the Conservative Party of Canada has been delayed for hours, after thousands of ballots were damaged.

The envelope-opening machines being used were “slicing through” some of the 174,849 mail-in ballots, resulting in “several thousand” being damaged, according to the party.

Not Canadian per se, but I bet you the study that Dougie shelved would have come away with similar results

The world’s most robust study of universal basic income has concluded that it boosts recipients’ mental and financial well-being, as well as modestly improving employment.

Finland ran a two-year universal basic income study in 2017 and 2018, during which the government gave 2000 unemployed people aged between 25 and 58 monthly payments with no strings attached.

The payments of €560 per month weren’t means tested and were unconditional, so they weren’t reduced if an individual got a job or later had a pay rise. The study was nationwide and selected recipients weren’t able to opt out, because the test was written into legislation.

Looks like the social conservative wing of the CPC will be the king-makers in another leadership race.
