New Canadian Politics Thread

This interim chief has carte blanche from all levels of government to do whatever it takes to move the insurrectionist occupiers out right now. Plus cover from 1) first day on the job; 2) part of a multi-jurisdictional beast with the RCMP and OPP; and 3) your predecessor just got fired for not doing enough.

No excuses.

A friend just asked me if it's true that the government can freeze people's bank accounts if they donated more than $25 to the convoy. This is obviously absurd, but it's spreading all over social media like a forest fire of disinformation.

Anyone know what the gov't actually said about this?

I’ve seen that so much but mostly from pro-convoy Twitter accounts so I’m not sure. The Globe article doesn’t mention anything about $25 dollars nor just random people who donate.

I’d love that particular bit to be cleared up because it’s being shared everywhere.

People are freaking out (including my friend). He supported the convoy largely because he doesn't think you should be forced to get vaccinated to keep your job (he is double vaxxed). This rumour is out of control on social media though, for sure. I spent about 20 minutes trying to find an answer but can't find any reference to this from a reputable source.

My guess is that since the list of donors was hacked and released, this idea was thrown out there to scare the hell out of anyone who donated. Probably a distorted version of something they said in the press conference. Hopefully someone here knows more.

What she said in the presser seems to be all in the Globe article. Banks can freeze accounts if suspected of illegal activity and the FINTRAC for crowdfunding stuff.

Having a hard time finding where the $25 donation stuff comes from, can only find it on Twitter accounts also calling Justin “Hitler”.

Fintrac means you have to report any transaction over $10k, but also "suspicious" transactions below that threshold. This has always been the law - the only new thing here is that the crowd funding sites now have to report to fintrac just like the banks do.

The way she describes it is insane. I would imagine it’s in a narrow scope in the legislation, but who knows. But even then giving banks free reign to freeze accounts is not great.

(iii) measures to authorize or direct any person to render essential services to relieve the impacts of the blockade, including measures to regulate or prohibit the use of property to fund or support the blockade, to require any crowdfunding platform and payment processor to report certain transactions to the Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada and to require any financial service provider to determine whether they have in their possession or control property that belongs to a person who participates in the blockade,
