New Canadian Politics Thread

% of GDP spent on research and development

It's like we're trying to hit the pause button on the early 00's before anyone gave a fuck about climate, our housing became ridiculously expensive, technology became the core driver of modern economies, etc, etc.

We're out of ideas on how to solve our problems because we stopped looking for them.
Huge problem, agreed. Canada needs way more funding for innovative work. A neurosurgeon friend of mine who does tech driven surgical stuff is being begged to start something up in the US, meanwhile Canada is offering nothing but barriers.

Yeah, at times it can hit on you mentally, you do wonder if you're causing an area to lose its character, or you wonder how the locals at all can manage. I'm in Vietnam now and there's so many like coffee shops where you have like 4-5 people working in them but I have barely ever seen anyone go in. Like my 3 dollar coffee can't pay for the salary for all of them, plus rent and stuff for the shop, right?

If you're settling down and raising a family, and are of appropriate means to live there, the ranking above makes sense. Sure, would love to live in Switzerland and enjoy all that they have. But for one year that it would cost to move to Switzerland and live in an ok apartment, you can probably live for 5 years in a beautiful villa in Mexico.
I would be very uncomfortable living well in a country with a population as poor as most Mexicans. I'm not a fan of being murdered while I sleep even though I generally support eating the rich.

Turks and Caicos keep asking…
Maybe if we did what the British did with Hong Kong, issue the people British passports that don't actually allow you to come to Britain. But I doubt you could get away with that in 2023. So if Canada were to annex T&C, we'd all rush down there for a vacation only to discover that no one lives there anymore because the entire population all just landed at Pearson.

Not in February..

I drove from LA to Tijuana with friends one night. We parked at the border, crossed and took a taxi. The driver promptly got on the exit ramp and drove the wrong way on the highway to the club that we wanted to go to.

Not a fun ride...

I took a public bus in Mexico. Interesting experience.

Where though? Huge difference between places for that. Vallarta and cancun/playa are no problem. Guadalajara and mexico city a bit more adventurous.....Tepic or veracruz, lol never again

I've never been to TJ, have only heard many stories....its a whole different place, probably the most gangster ass city in Mexico.

This was in the 80's. Everything that you ever heard about the place was true. Lots of drunk 19 year olds looking to get laid and poverty everywhere.

Wonderful place with some problems. Requires a different style of life than we're used to but in some ways its better.

Yeah, it's not for everyone, for sure. The advantage is that a little money goes a long way. Even when the taxi driver tries to scam you with expensive tourist rates, it's still way cheaper than grabbing a cab in Toronto. Even if you don't want to worry about figuring out the collectivos, most places you can hop in a cab across town for not much more than a TTC fare.

It was Mexico city. And yes, it does make a difference where.
I gotta say though I found Cancun a little dicey. (Didn't take a bus but walked).

I’ve never been to a resort
I did a resort once due to peer pressure. I felt suffocated and bored and trapped by day 2 while everyone around me was having a blast throughout the entire trip. I see the appeal and get why they're popular and I'm the weird one in this scenario as the clear outlier.

First and last time though.
