I've been mulling a future where I live somewhere in the Balkans (Montenegro) for a few months per year...this makes it more feasible I think.

The golden visa programs are typically just a foot in the door. They generally have residency requirements (180-190 days in country per year or in the last year before you apply, whatever...your mileage may vary) if you apply for permanent residency.

Apparently Hungary has one of the lowest bars for citizenship by ancestry but it's worth looking into.

I found out I can get EU citizenship through my mother's Hungarian birth certificate. Definitely going to pursue that to open up options for y family as we age.

Just don't actually move to Hungary

It's undoubtedly a country full of bad things and a troubled past. But it's still full of beautiful architecture and some genuinely good people. But no, I don't want to live there.
