New Canadian Politics Thread

You can usually count on Doug to come up with the solution that’s the dumbest one possible, while still somehow being appealing to his base.

Yeah. That’s the main conclusion. The issue is so friggin’ complicated. I saw stuff in small cities and rural areas (neither one in Ontario) that was pretty bad. It’s everywhere.

From my perspective Canada seems ripe for new political movement / party. Need some big time backing, some big time progressive promises (e.g. huge infrastructure/transit investment, national meal programs, innovation) all couched in a bleeding red and white patriotic core.

The Canada Future Party definitely isn't this.

An energized and interesting NDP would do much of the same instead of being this low energy, whiny version of 3rd-4th place progressivism that it's turned into.

Should be something super brash and attention getting, but with actual good policy hidden behind it.

1) Democratic reform, Trudeau won a big chunk of the left on that alone before deciding that it no longer benefitted him and scrapping it.
2) True single payer healthcare across the board. Medical, dental, drug, etc.
3) Massive investment in training healthcare professionals (free education if you want to be a doctor basically)
4) Significant subsidization of a basket of academic and trades based educations

But this party needs to not give a shit about norms or playing nice. They need to be willing to get dirty and play dirty like the Cons do. They need to troll just as hard. Otherwise they'll be eaten alive by the the alt.right fuckwads.

Drop affirmative action

Change the fundamentalist nature of their cultural policies.

Freeland shifted out of finance, and resigns from Cabinet

Mildly positions her as someone not always on the same page as JT when they start the leadership race next year.

Strikes me as a very desperate attempt to put some distance between herself and JT.

So that when he resigns, either before the election or after getting annihilated in the election, she’ll try her best not to get sucked down into the political abyss along with him and instead run as some peculiar species of “change” candidate.

Think it’s far too late though. Her and Justin are joined at the hip politically at this point and will both suffer the same fate, whatever that may be.

As for Justin, I wonder who he’s planning to turn to on his increasingly thin bench to take over the finance portfolio.

Also interesting that, at this point, every prominent woman MP who’s worked under our self-proclaimed “feminist” PM has eventually split publicly and acrimoniously with him during his time in office. Hell, even including his wife.
