New Canadian Politics Thread

There is no deal to be had other than capitulation though. Which doesn't sound like a deal to me.

Ending him though, yeah, that would probably be part of the plan.

The Americans don't have the stomache for seeing bags come home on social media.
By the time we're invaded American media will only show what the Trump administration and the Army wants them to see.

You have to stop thinking about the US as a democracy with a free press anymore. If it gets to the point where they're invading us, it will be a full-on, fascist dictatorship by then. Americans who aren't part of the invasion will have no access to any information about what's going on with the invasion.

Don’t get a rebate for the exact amount of carbon tax you paid? A specific special return just for you?

Or could you game the system so that you reduce your carbon-intensive activities, like driving a car, and come out ahead?

Worm was talking about income taxes

Lol middle aged slobs to save the day.

If it comes to it. We’re absolutely fucked.

Look, I’m not under any delusions about my own abilities. I do have some outdoors skills & experience that maaaaybe could be not totally useless.

But generally speaking, I am a middle-aged, out-of-shape desk jockey that doesn’t know a damn thing about any kind of combat.

Still though—if it came to it, I’d rather die tomorrow as a Canadian fighting for my country than live another 40 years as an American living in a conquered Canada.

If that makes me dumb or crazy, so be it.

Yeah, obviously we have to take it seriously. Trump is a madman drunk on power and completely untethered from reality. Therefore wildly unpredictable. But I've read enough opinions from people in the know to conclude it's really quite unlikely he'd launch an actual invasion. Less than 1% likely. He himself and his followers say he's the "no war" president. A significant number of high-ranking people in Washington and in the Armed Forces would refuse. There would be mass demonstrations, like millions of people in the streets. The question would be asked about why the U.S. should spend a trillion dollars to attack a friendly neighbour. And while I would not bet a penny on these cowards, I think even some Republicans would be on board with impeachment at that point.

And also, it would invoke NATO protection, would it not? I think Europe would have to get involved. Obviously we need to prepare in advance, beef up our military and drone tech, quietly chat with the Euros behind the scenes.

But it's much more likely to be an economic war that he's already in the process of starting. Even if I think sanity will prevail here too, we have to take this threat as 100% serious. It's not just us either, there will be tariffs going both ways all around the world if this idiocy continues.
"We have always been at war with Canada."

"Goldstein is Canadian".

!!!!

Strains credulity… look at the Alberta result??!! I mean, they note it’s likely due to a sample size issue. Did they only poll Old Strathcona?

I was previously admonished for not accepting interesting looking results, digging into the #crosstabs, and not just throwing it in the averages, which I've been told are perfect.

Fuck it, throw it in the averages baby.

Hmmm. . . Deflected response to a straightforward question, plus "trust" (between US/Canada) no longer of premium value. . . Take the 16 F35s, and go have a chat with France, UK, and Sweden about contracts for flight products. Sort storage and coordination creatively later.

Could pretty easily see a scenario where they try to weaken us economically, then have troops enter the country under the pretext of national security/some fentanyl issue and then try to extort something out of us to leave whether it’s border revisions or natural resources. That’s what they seem to be laying the foundation/establishing the narrative for.

Watched Carney's introductory presser as PM.

As far as news goes, these were the highlights from his Q&A:

  • Emmanuel Macron has invited him to to a visit in Paris. And after meeting Macron, he'll be meeting with Keir Starmer in the UK. Discussions will be focused on security in Europe & Canada, increased trade & economic links and the historic ties between our countries.

  • No plans to visit the United States, will talk to Trump at an unspecified future time.

  • He declined to answer when or if he'll be recalling the house, when he'll have an election or where he’ll be running for his own seat. He joked that they'd have an election "sometime before November" before saying more news will be coming out in the next few days.

  • Snapped at a bit at a reporter who'd asked basically if we'd seek public support/assurances of Canada's sovereignty & security from our allies. Said that "we are the masters of our own house" and that we're in charge of assuring our own sovereignty. That while “it’s nice if people say nice things about you”, we don’t need it and won’t be seeking it.
