New Canadian Politics Thread

I think we can all safely assume at this late date that Poilievre isn't going to be Prime Minister; not even with a minority. He is finished.

Carney, on the other hand, even if he completely chokes like the 2021 Leafs, will still win at least a minority. But the likely outcome is a comfortable Liberal majority.

Is it too late to get Facebook bots pushing a « “write in Trump” campaign?

Federal election law requires that if any write-in candidate receives 2% or more of the vote, the election is suspended and a special referendum must be held on adding President Trump to the ballot”

How many Maple MAGAts would see through that?

Useful link for those who have "I'm leaving the country" friends/relatives

Maple MAGA's don't have skills that any other country would need or want. They have village idiots in every nation. They'll just need to sit there and be talked down to for another decade.

And I am here for it!

jeez I'm gonna have to decide if I stay up past my bedtime for election results, game 5, or both.

leaning towards game 5 right now...

I'd be lying if I said I was 100% certain that Carney has it in the bag, but I don't think the polls are going to turn out to be wrong outside of their MoE, and anything within their MoE is a comfie Liberal majority. Outside of the MoE is a slim majority or strong minority. We'd be talking about a polling fuck up of the century for them to be off by enough for the CPC to win. Like, the aggregate being off by ~8 points. Remember when Mainstreet ran their seat projections on their CPC +4 result from 2 weeks ago, the result was a 155 seat Liberal minority.

Interesting hypothetical.

If you could only pick one of these two outcomes, which one would you pick?

1) Kamala Harris wins the Presidency in the US & Pierre Poilievre’s CPC wins a supermajority in Canada.

2) Donald Trump wins the Presidency in the US and Mark Carney’s Liberals win a majority government in Canada.

Honestly probably #1 for me

I’m gonna pick 2. Higher risk obviously but more interesting to see how Carney and the World responds

I'm gonna say #2 on the assumption (hope?) that the repubs lose the House and/or Senate in the midterms

Probably #1 for me too, to be honest.

Only because I think democracy crumbling in the US with a president who sees us as an adversary puts us in a very dangerous position.
At the end of the day, Pee-Pee is only a wannabe Trump. Without Trump in power he has no rizz (and no allies in any Democrat run administration) and if he were to be elected he would step on enough rakes soon enough that he would be as reviled as Harper inside of 12 months. But even if he isn't, Poilievre does not pose an existential threat to our democracy unless he is aided and abetted by a like-minded US President. This is why it's so much more important today that the Cons not win; because Trump won. Had Harris won, Poilievre would probably be well on his way to that supermajority today. And that would be bad but not fatal. Trump, however, is a terminal disease. You can "cure" a case of the Pee-Pee's; he's like an annoying rash. But Trump is Stage 4 pancreatic cancer. He eventually kills you.

#2 because Trump is a symptom of the rot in the US, not the cause. There’s no prospect of a safe, prosperous world order led by the current version of the US, whether it’s headed by a Democrat or a Republican. There’s at least hope for whatever rises from the ashes, and Trump is the ultimate unintentional arsonist (and yes, we might all die in the fire)

You clearly didn't understand the assignment.

Congress will be irrelevant by the time the mid-terms roll around. If the Project 2025 people have their way (and, so far, they have) the US Congress will have about as much power over what Trump does, as the Russian Duma has over what Putin does.
