Also Italy while having good a good train and bus network is not nearly as reliable to get around as Switzerland. I learned pretty quickly to check things myself because train times, platform numbers, and bus services are just suggestion.

Switzerland is just so fantastic. There are places I'd gladly live in a small apartment to spend my days in exchange for a better overall life. That's one of them.

I do think you could live in a nice mountain town in Italy or Slovenia for a reasonably close quality of life. Like I was in this town called Verceia in Italy for two days and it was gorgeous and way cheaper than Switzerland, but only an hour from the Swiss border. For example a cappuccino and a pastry in the morning was 2.2 Euro....just a coffee in Switzerland was more. I guess it all depends what you want. I love mountain towns though especially with a lake nearby...living on one would be the best way to spend retirement imo.
