Also Italy while having good a good train and bus network is not nearly as reliable to get around as Switzerland. I learned pretty quickly to check things myself because train times, platform numbers, and bus services are just suggestion.

Switzerland is just so fantastic. There are places I'd gladly live in a small apartment to spend my days in exchange for a better overall life. That's one of them.

I do think you could live in a nice mountain town in Italy or Slovenia for a reasonably close quality of life. Like I was in this town called Verceia in Italy for two days and it was gorgeous and way cheaper than Switzerland, but only an hour from the Swiss border. For example a cappuccino and a pastry in the morning was 2.2 Euro....just a coffee in Switzerland was more. I guess it all depends what you want. I love mountain towns though especially with a lake nearby...living on one would be the best way to spend retirement imo.

US would also hate us opening up to chinese EVs. This where the rubber meets the road. Things we may want to save up for to CUSMA negotiations, if we think they're possible.

Well, I do feel great comfort in the knowledge that if we just do what they say, they'll be completely consistent and honest partners going forward in all things.
Ya I mean there could be no point in conceding a single thing because we'll be fucked either way. But pragmatically there may need to be some optics to just keeping a low profile until the next news cycle.
