New Canadian Politics Thread

I'm pretty sure they've done quality of life studies that show that seven storey residential is some kid of limit. Once you exceed seven storeys you start sacrificing any sense of community, natural sunlight that reaches the street, peoples happiness etc. Living in a box 30 storeys in the air isn't natural.

Lived 21st floor in Calgary for a few years and anecdotally can confirm. The view of the mountains and river was lovely, but it didn't have any sense of community or anything. Only time I met my neighbour was to threaten him for beaking off at wifey while I was away at work and she asked him to turn his music down.

The zoning laws that Mindz referred to are the problem -- it's either condo towers or single family homes allowed.

Most of the centrally located hoods in Montreal are filled with duplexes or triplexes. That practical type of density is not allowed in 75% of the GTA.

It's a joke.
 
china was weird

in canada you would have a random farm house and then nothing for miles - well in china it was a random 6 giant apartment towers and then nothing for miles

Fair! I guess in my defense, I don’t have much to work with.

On one side of me is a house that’s been subdivided and turned into AirBnB units.

One the other side is an elderly Chinese couple that can’t speak English and who I usually run into when I’m headed out with my elderly, tail-wagging Golden Retriever, who they react to like he’s a horrifying monster that wants to rip their guts out.
 
Heh, ya, some of my neighbours move from the sidewalk and start walking on the street when they see they're going to have to pass me and my Collie. Despite the fact that I always have him under control and always yield the sidewalk.

Plus he's a collie, not exactly an intimidating breed.

The differences in how some cultures view dogs is something.

when I was growing up in Richmond Hill (significant Chinese population) our family had a golden doodle. she was maybe 65-70 pounds but the calmest, most gentle dog going (much like I imagine your golden is). neighbours would routinely cross the street when they saw us coming.

now, of course, we own a pittie mix, and I have become pretty adept at spotting the dog racists. the funniest are the ones we encounter in the off-leash dog park we visit regularly. even funnier when our girl is FAR better behaved than the dogs whose owners are afraid of her...

man, people afraid of a Collie and a Golden. can only imagine the reactions my beast would garner...
 
we live in the top floor of a house right now. sadly, our downstairs neighbours just bought their own place and moved out at the end of March. I long ago accepted that they are the best neighbours ever and whoever replaces them will be inferior. just as an example, they would routinely clean the snow off our car after a storm, just because. also fed our cat when we were gone. and just the loveliest people. I actually went and visited them at their new place earlier this week. also displaced upper canadians.

today I encountered the new guy for the first time as I was coming inside with the dog. was kinda rude to him cause covid and all and didn't want to linger lol (I left a note on his door after the fact introducing ourselves). I am very confused though cause no moving truck has arrived and it is not a small unit by any stretch... but the greatest initial news appears to be he does not have a car so I do not need to share our driveway with him.
 
Only person I've talked to at all in 5 years of living in my building is the sweet older lady that parks beside me. Reminds me of my mom (including the grade F parking skills)
 
It’s probably not because of you guys per say. They’ve likely encountered one of the many horrible dog owners who are not in control of their dogs.

at the risk of making some offensive generalizations, I think for some it is a result of experience, and for others it is cultural. when I was in Ecuador stray dogs were fucking everywhere and so folks' attitudes towards dogs in general were totally different. then you have the folks who have an actual traumatic experience too. and yeah, tons and tons of irresponsible dog owners.

Nothing more uncomfortable than walking with my father in-law and pit bull around Richmond Hill. The looks we get are something else...
 
We have 3 pomeranians. Sometimes, bigger dogs don’t know what they are (besides prey). I’ll almost always avoid an oncoming person for that reason. Luckily many people just move somewhere else anyways cause small dogs have a bad rep from owners allowing them to rule the world.
