New Waiver Rules

So a league that a bunch of us are in has a continuous rolling waivers with claims resolving on Sundays. What it does is allows teams to stay active and claim prospects all year but also doesn't allow teams to unfairly claim nearly signed college free agents or KHL free agents during the season. Basically gives everyone a fair shot at players if they're willing to do research and stay active.

Does anyone have any objections to this? Please have your say. I'll put up a poll once we've discussed.

Yeah even though I am super active and usually benefit from the free-for-all on the FA pool all year, this is much more fair. No one can complain they don't have 15 minutes per week to do a little prospect research and submit a waiver claim or two.

Can you elaborate a bit more on this?

Sure. In the past, if a player was signed from a KHL team during the NHL season, whoever got onto Fantrax earlier and claimed him, got him. Same for college free agents. With the new waiver system, you'd have to submit a waiver claim instead which would resolve on Sunday. After the claims are processed, all the unclaimed players go back on waives. Therefore everyone gets a shot at these kinds of players. Waiver priority will actually have value as well.

Sounds fair. My one question though is what happens if you run into injury trouble on Monday and don't have a replacement on the bench. You can't pick up a guy and you're sol that week.

Hmm..well we can move the waiver end time closer to the weekly lineup lock. It doesn't have to be Sunday. Maybe an hour before the weekly lock time would work?

As someone who has picked up several of those types over the years i dont really like the change but im not against it.

Being a weekly set up league that shouldn't be a problem. You'll get your players Sunday morning with plenty of time to set your lineup for Monday.

Rosters lock <1 hour prior to the start of the first game on Monday evening if I remember correctly.

For this to work, Weekly Waivers would need to be resolved Sunday at Noon at the latest.

This would give teams at least 24 hours to set-up our rosters prior to the Monday night lock.

Personally I don’t like the idea in this league as much as in the other.

What is pleasant in this league is that usually you can set up your Roster any time you feel like it in the week, as long as you make your roster changes prior to the next Monday.

Brent Burns get injured on Tuesday ? Wednesday I go search on the Free Agent pool if a defenseman is maybe producing better than my bench and/or has more games to play in the following week to make up for my injured player GP loss.
Claim the guy, set-up my line-up.
Done. See ya when I feel like it next week.

Now with this rule there is added difficulty. I can’t set up my team in case of injuries as freely at any given time I see fit during the week because now I have to wait until Sunday to see if the Free Agent I claimed will be available to my team.

Also if I am competing for a podium, and I can’t get a decent replacement in the Free Agent pool, in that same example I would for look a trade before the next week.
With the added Waivers, I won’t know until Sunday and be left with only 24 hours to work a trade.

I like this idea in the other league a lot more than in this one because this other league is a lot more sophisticated, complicated, with 32 highly active maniac GMs.

This one is more laidback.
I mean one of the big problem last year is that GMs would leave non-eligible players in their minors for a few weeks in the name of inactivity.
Getting GMs to come in and set their rosters / claim Free Agents once a week at any given time was a win. Now we want them to have to come twice a week; one to claim and one to set-up rosters.

Again it is pleasant to be able to set your team any time you see fit and not have to worry about it on Monday if you don’t want to.

Very few KHL players or College Players are signed prior to the offseason when the Free Agents pick-ups are unavailable.

Even then those players don’t
hold the same value in this league, which is less deep than a 32 teams league where every single players in the world matters.

What this rule affects the most is the ability to pick-up a performing Free Agent player :
Martin Frk is a Free Agent and scored 3 goals tonight.
First one to add him gets him.

This is the main thing and I understand why the league would prefer to give the time and opportunity to every teams in the league to claim him before resolving every claims by Sunday via waivers instead of first arrive first serve.

The problem with this is I that I think that the negatives of loss of flexibility in setting the roster at any given time in the week instead of solely on Monday and the added difficulty of not being able to plan on how to best deal with and injury before the last day of the week outweights the benefits of the rule.

So what if waivers is set for 6 days a week? I.E, they start after the roster lock time on Monday and finish on Sunday sometime? Would mostly serve the goal we're shooting for, but gives managers flexibility to fix a lineup.

Waivers resolved on Sunday at 9:00AM would leave a bit more time to GMs to prepare their team prior to Monday rosters lock.

Waivers resolved on Sunday at 12:00PM would give the opportunity to GMs to make claims Sunday morning, while still leaving at least 24 hours to GMs to prepare their team prior to Monday rosters lock. Same time as the other league so that would be nice in that way I guess.

If the league is moving forward with the rule change I would be okay with either options, but I would be strongly opposed to Waivers resolving later than 12:00PM on Sunday.

I think I would still vote Nay to the rule change poll, but it would be more in terms of preference, not something I’d feel strongly about if done properly. I completely agree with the intention behind this new rule.

Are we just trying to fix something that wasnt broken?

If someone wants to spend a couple hours going over every NCAA and KHL team to try and find FA prospects then why not allow them to just make the pickup.

Wasn't it a rule at one point that the undrafted/KHL/college players could only be picked up during the draft?

Not a huge fan of this rule, really. Not even in the other league, though it definitely makes more sense there. I do like the idea of being able to add a player when you like, rather than always having to wait for waivers to run. Not sure a couple of international signings is worth adding a rule.

Worthy of discussion though, for sure.

Maybe some kind of rule specific to newly signed UFAs?
