No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

"Games 6 and 7".

This is still a real issue apart from everything else.

Maybe it is, but I never see the analysis include opposition top players and when I look into it myself, I don't see good teams get whomped by opposition star players very often.

Shit, if you look at our only game 6 or 7 last year only Matthews and Tavares scored in game 6 of the Tampa series. In the most important games of the Florida series, Rielly and Nylander scored our only goals in game 5 (OT loss to end the season). In the 2-1 win to force game 5 we won 2-1 and got goals from Nylander and Marner. The previous season in games 6-7, Matthews had 2 points, Tavares 2 points, Nylander 2 points, Marner 1 point, Rielly 1 point. So a combined 8 points. The rest of the team combined for 4 points tota over games 6-7.

It's not the "real issue" it's made out to be and is massively exacerbated by exactly what we appear to be doing again. We always need more grit, more snot, more physicality and then wonder why the offence dries up when they games get tight. If your best guys chip in 2 goals in an elimination game, you should fucking win that game because they other 15 guys on the roster should also do things other than be physical and snotty.

No doubt, the other players need to contribute more, but you pay each of these four guys $11M+ to deliver when the stakes are high and the chips are down. Okay, sometimes they're not completely silent, and put up a couple of points, but we never, ever, ever, ever have had any of them go nuts in a game 6 or 7. I think Tavares scored 2 in that one against TB two seasons ago when we lost it in the third. That's about the best I think we've seen from these guys in all these years.

We need ONE of those game 7 outcomes to come off a hat trick from Matty, or a 5 assist night from Marner. I know teams buckle down and there's very little room...okay, that's a solid excuse for coming up short SOMETIMES. But we've had multiple opportunities to close teams out in games 6 and 7 of a series being up 3-2, and we have never gotten one of those stomp on their necks closeout performances. We have to have it once in a while, regardless of what Bunting, Marleau, Bertuzzi, Mikheyev, and Domi are doing.

But that's the point, they have delivered when the chips are down. Asking them to carry an entire team isn't realistic though, that's just not how teams win cups.

Because this is real life and not a superhero movie. This shit is rare. Go through the playoff careers of the best players in the world and you see it happening very few times in their entire careers. Crosby has done it twice in his career, once in an 8-5 game 6 win against Philly in 2018, and once in a 6-2 game 7 win against Washington in 2008.... if the definition of "go nuts" is get more than 2 points. Because we've had guys do that in games 6-7 before.

The first time in 08 Sid scored the opener and then 4 Pens (Adams, Guerin, Letang, Staal) scored to make it 5-0. Sid scored a fairly inconsequential PP goal to make it 6-1 early in the 3rd. The story of that game wasn't Sid going nuts, it was Penguins depth scoring (Ovechkin did score in the 2nd, fwiw). The 8-5 game against Philly was the same...Sid wasn't even the Pens best player that night. 23 yr old Guentzel, the Pens 6th highest scoring player in the regular season, popped 4 goals and added a primary apple coming back from a 4-2 deficit.

What you ask of them is extremely rare. Someone could argue that McDavid has done it twice, but he did it both times against a pretty mediocre Kings team. He's put up good game 6-7 efforts against better teams (like our guys have) but ended up losing those series as well.

We need ONE of those game 7 outcomes to come off a hat trick from Matty, or a 5 assist night from Marner.

The issue imo is your expectation. This shit just doesn't really happen that way for anyone else in hockey. Crosby has never done what you're asking for, McDavid has never done it, Ovechkin has never done it, etc.

What you're asking for is a super hero saving a bad team effort. Why not just skip the whole bad team effort in game 6-7 thing instead?

Parayko is a good skater from what I can remember. Like a really good skater. 6.5 mil doesn’t seem like a lot for a top pairing guy. If he is in fact a top pairing defender.

what is Hanifin looking to sign for?

I'm more on the train that we need a 2C to replace Domi.

Lindholm would be a very interesting fit.

I then think you gotta move Domi to 3W 4W

Knies (Dont like it really) papi marn
Bertuzzi Lindholm/Jenner Nylander
Domi/Mcmann JT Jarnkrok
Domi/Holmberg Kampf Mcmann/Holmberg/Reaves

The belief is 7 something for Hanafin

I just really want another forward in the 3C role...or just defensively sound.

The numbers when Matthews and JT aren't on the ice is not good

I wonder what a Parayko or Hanifin deal looks like. No interest in moving Robertson, Minten, Knies or Cowan. Would rather just go with the team as is and see how the roster shakes out next year with those young guys taking another step.

My one functioning hope is that we've done so much damage to Lilly & Robertson's reputations around the league with how we've developed them that no one is smart enough to want them for anything Pizza Boy wants to bring in.

I dont think all GM's are this dumb

You just need to hang onto the hope that the 5-6 he's talking to are and i wouldnt get my hopes up
