Their blurb on the Leafs. Nothing really new here. We’re looking for a 3rd line center and a depth RHD to replace Haaaakaaantuah.

Toronto Maple Leafs

It’s nearly decision time after a months-long pursuit of a third-line center. The Leafs have looked at Brayden Schenn in St. Louis and Scott Laughton in Philadelphia, while keeping tabs on fall-back rental options like Montreal’s Jake Evans, Seattle’s Yanni Gourde and Utah’s Nick Bjugstad. Meanwhile, GM Brad Treliving is also hoping to procure another depth defenseman who can play the right side. A tight cap situation looms over every decision in Toronto, which is why Treliving is likely to seek salary retention from any seller and/or use another team as a third-party broker to make the money work.

And of course, the Leafs don't have an especially tight cap situation.

Correction:

We shouldn’t have an especially tight cap situation.

…but if our GM considers Yarncock, Kampf & Reaves essential and untouchable players, which his dumb ass probably does, then we’ve basically got no space.

not really. we HAVE to drop guys to get under the 23 man roster limit. there's no choice there. the current cap numbers are counting 25 or 26 players.

Hakanpaa is obviously staying on ltir now.

so even if we drop just the cheapest guy on the roster (let's say holmberg) to get under the 23 man limit (with hak the 24th on ltir), we have about $1.5m in space.....but that's with a full roster. So any trade would have to include someone else being dropped off roster, which would mean about $2.5-3.0 in space to bring someone in even by just losing the very cheapest guys off the roster AND by carrying a full 23 man roster.

So for example with Hak on LTIR and dropping the two cheapest borderline forwards Holmberg and Dewar to get down to a 22 man roster and free up space for an incoming player to be the 23rd player we would have $2.83m in capspace all for that new player without doing anything fancy at all.

But we can start to free up millions more by dropping/trading guys other than the cheapest ones on the roster and/or going with a 22 man roster until the playoffs.

Want Tre to make a big splash and I don't see it happening. Likely see a Laughton type addition and a depth d-man, which is not enough IMO

BSchenn might be not be an right target but if the rumors are real then it shows at least that he wanted to make a big add.

Seems like the Schenn trade is hinging on the Blues vs Leafs perceived value and the Leafs are willing to take on Luke.

I cant see Nashville doing any favors and eating salary on this one

So no real surprises.

1. Rielly not an elite Dman. Good news is that playoffs Rielly is usually one. But no guarantees there. And the Leafs make up for that weakness by having 4 top pair quality dmen at the moment. Still, to really make up for it without adding a #1 you would want to add another legit top-4 guy imo.

2. Knies/Domi are in the "passable but below average" range for #5/6 forwards. Good news is that McMann is well above average in the next slot, and that playoffs Domi has been much better than this season's Domi over the last couple of playoffs at least.

"leafs are capped out" thing getting repeated all over the place and it's just not true.

it's as if people don't even notice that CAR and FLA both just had to ship out big contracts AND get big retention in order to make their recent adds. there is nothing notable about the leafs' cap situation - if anything, it's better than most of the competition's.

Hopefully there’s a very wide gulf between the Blues’ perceived value of Schenn and our front office’s.

Because the Blues seem to think his trade value should be based on a combination of his on-ice production from 3-4 years ago, as well as his sentimental value to the Blues organization.
