No Excuses No Limits! The mother fucking goddamn season thread

So Stammer got $4m more in guaranteed money to play on a shit team, and have way higher expectations on him. And to earn any more than that he'll have to decide whether he wants to play at 39 for league min somewhere. Instead of getting to play on an elite contender with only complementary player expectations in a city where he was already a legend, and "retire" whenever he felt like it and still get all his money, with likely a cushy front office / team ambassador job set up for him at many more millions for life.

Dumb, dumb Stammer.

I dunno. These were the regular season & playoff numbers he was coming off:

…so I can get it being a tough pill to swallow when his team tells him it’s time for him to accept an old guy/retirement contract.

The fact that he left a ton of money on the table when he signed his first big UFA contract might’ve been a factor too. He might’ve felt it was the organization’s turn to pay him back for the favour he did them when he took a way below-market AAV during their prime contention years.

And money up front is always far more valuable than deferred money. So it’s not just the raw total of $4M more. It’s also getting most of that money front-loaded over the next few years instead of spread out over eight years.

Stamkos was butt hurt that they didn’t care about keeping him.

Tavares doesn’t care, he just wants to stay. Apparently they told him that they can’t sign him before Marner and aren’t even negotiating with him. He’ll take whatever. He’s going to move his wife and kids away from home for money they don’t need?

foolish , good on him

His playoff production is extremely replaceable.

Especially if, once again, Mitch wants to rinse this franchise for an above-market deal. I’d still rather let him walk in that scenario.
I get their playoff issues but you need 16 to get there , best playmaker on the team

What you gonna do give Ehlers 8-9 mil or overpay a few nobody dudes

This should should have been resolved years ago

He left minimal take home money living in Florida

No you don’t.

And I mean, if Marner leaves, what’s the worry, exactly? That we’ll lose in the first round every year?

Oh no! I can’t even fathom what a terrible change that would be.

an 8yr contract at age 35 is pretty dang generous tho. that's not just an old guy/retirement contract.

An attempt at a scoring / scoring depth comparison.

Using 2yr stats, average of 5v5 P1/60 and P/60.

Players are ordered by TOI/Role as best I could figure/guess:

Biggest difference is our D

Combined:
Edmonton: 4.94
Tbay: 4.51
Florida: 3.96
Tor: 3.71

We need D that can score. Should’ve gone after Walman over Carlo. He was traded for less too.

i'm happy to have Carlo tbh. Rielly's been so much better with Carlo beside him.

meanwhile....

Timmins in PIT: 10gms, 5v5 15:11 (+0.0dzs%), 55.3xgf% (+7.4rel), 1.59ap/60

Timmins 2yrs: 86gms, 5v5 14:13 (-0.9dzs%), 54.0xgf% (+5.1rel), 0.79ap/60

40 point pace dmen on Cup winners
Florida: Montour, Forsling
Vegas: Pietro, Theodore
Avs: Makar, Toews, Bryan
Tbay: Hedman, Sergachev
tbay: Hedman, Sergachev, Shattenkirk
Blues: Pietro
Caps: Carlson
Pens: Schultz, Letang*
Pens: Letang
Hawks: Keith
Kings: Doughty
Hawks: Keith
kings: Doughty
Bruins: Chara, Kaberle
Hawks: Keith, Campbell
Pens: Gonchar
Wings: Lidstrom, Rafalski, Kronwall
Ducks: Niedermayer, Pronger
Canes: F. kaberle

Rielly is currently on pace for 38 points.

Our blue line has been inept producing offense for years at this point and we always wonder why we can’t score.

Zeke is there a rule 35 if a player signs at 35 and over

Player cant be sent down to the minors or be used as LTIR in case of injury
there is a rule for contracts signed when the player is 35 or older.

I believe that the rule prevents you from burying cap hits once these players retire. i.e. any 35+ contract signed, you're stuck with the full cap hit for the full deal. but I suspect there is a bit more nuance to it than that.

contracts signed before a player turns 35 can be buried in the minors/IR and not affect your total cap number.

I think that's the broad strokes. which is why giving JT 8 years at 35 years old carries huge risk - you could be stuck with dead space on your cap for several years at the end of the deal

The restrictions Only apply if it’s front loaded. That’s why we can send Reaves down, because his salary is the same all 3 years,

Tavares won’t turn 35 until after the deal starts anyway though.

thanks , JT would sign early in UFA a few months short of his 35th

with us using a 5-forward PP unit though that 40pt barrier becomes much less meaningful, the majority of those dmen's points come on the PP.

I mean clearly it's an issue. And the 5v5 scoring i posted above indicates that pretty clearly i think.

But it's still true that PP scoring influences dman scoring more than anyone, and we're runing a 5-forward PP. Can't make our dmen look worse just because they're not getting any PP time.

Really need to compare apples to apples here (which is what I attempted to do above).

yeah that's fine but Pietro scored 25 even strength points that cup year, Carlson scored 36. Keith scored 28 and 16. Doughty scored 23 and 20. Chara 27.

PP production is just so huge for dmen's point totals.
