One or two excuses & probably quite limited! The "ah fuck, here we go again" playoff thread

Matchups

Matthews: C Coyle 7:36, D Lindholm 10:19

Tavares: C Zacha 5:54, D McAvoy 8:01

Holmberg: C Geekie 6:40, D McAvoy 5:19

Kampf: C Boqvist 3:48, D Peeke 6:00

Bruins kept the matchups simple but pretty hard matched. Top two lines against each other, 3rd line vs 3rd line, 4th line vs 4th line. Lindholm-Carlo the top shutdown pair on on Matthews, Grzelcyk-McAvoy the more offensive top-4 pair on Tavares.

Seems tho that the Bs were able to target our bottom pair a bit.

Rielly: 1. Geekie 4:58, 2. Coyle 4:49, 3. Boqvist 3:55, 4. Zacha 3:07
Lyubushkin: 1. Geekie 4:07, 2. Coyle 2:28, 3. Zacha 2:07, 4. Boqvist 1:57

McCabe: 1. Geekie 4:52, 2. Zacha 4:04, 3. Coyle 4:01, 4. Boqvist 2:02
Benoit: 1. Geekie 4:39, 2. Zacha 4:13, 3. Coyle 4:01, 4. Boqvist 2:28

Liljegren: 1. Boqvist 4:40, 2. Zacha 4:27, 3. Coyle 4:21, 4. Geekie 2:39
Edmundson: 1. Zacha 3:43, 2. Coyle 3:18, 3. Boqvist 3:06, 4. Geekie 2:34

Bertuzzi-Matthews-Domi: 10:48, 40.1xgf%, 50.0gf%
Knies-Tavares-Marner: 7:00, 46.4xgf%, 50.0gf%
Robertson-Holmberg-Jarnkrok: 8:06, 68.3xgf%, 50.0gf%
Dewar-Kampf-Reaves: 6:18, 82.5xgf%, 51.8gf%

Matthews-Tavares-Marner: 1:24, 100.0xgf%, 50.0gf%
Dewar-Kampf-Jarnkrok: 1:42, 50.0xgf%, 50.0gf%

Don't believe the hype about us dominating the game. Our top two lines were kept well in check by boston.

Rielly-Lyubushkin: 10:06, 72.0xgf%, 50.0gf%
Benoit-McCabe: 12:42, 74.0xgf%, 100.0gf%
Edmundson-Liljegren: 10:24, 56.7xgf%, 00.0gf%

Rielly-Liljegren: 4:00, 24.2xgf%, 00.0gf%

nothing glaring about the regular pairings. But Rielly-Liljegren got abused, even though i'm assuming those were all ozone starts.

solid chance it's Brodie in for Liljegren tommorrow to make sure we have the most unskilled blueline in hockey.

Marchand-Coyle-Debrusk: 9:18, 20.3xgf%, 100.0gf%
Heinen-Zacha-Pastrnak: 8:06, 69.0xgf%, 50.0gf%
Lauko-Geekie-Frederic: 8:12, 11.5xgf%, 50.0gf%
Beecher-Boqvist-Maroon: 4:36, 73.2xgf%, 100.0gf%

Beecher-Boqvist-Frederic: 2:06, 89.0xgf%, 50.0gf%

Their top two matchup lines kinda got destroyed....but we couldn;'t make them pay.

Their other two lines feasted.

Grzelcyk-McAvoy: 13:12, 20.9xgf%, 50.0gf%
Lindholm-Carlo: 10:54, 70.2xgf%, 100.0gf%
Shattenkirk-Peeke: 6:48, 40.4xgf%, 00.0gf%

Lindholm-McAvoy: 2:42, 23.5xgf%, 50.0gf%
Peeke-Carlo: 2:24, 00.0xgf%, 50.0gf%
Lindholm-Peeke: 2:18, 00.0xgf%, 50.0gf%

We kind have had our way with 2 of their pairings, including whatever pairing McAvoy was on, but couldn't make them pay.

But Lindholm-Carlo were excellent shutting down our top lines.

Thing is, all of our competition seems to do this shit. Only we don't. We turned a bunch of high 1sts and 11 million dollars in free agency into our core. Congrats on not fucking that up and all (sorta...I'll set aside the free agent for the time being) but looking at our competition:

Florida: Went over them in another post but turned a low 1st into a 50/90 player, a rando pickup and an aging star into a young stud, and their top 9/top 4 are loaded with smart, cheap pickups.

Tampa: Turned a french winger into a top pairing defender, had the balls to take a goalie in the 1st round and he became a franchise tendie for a decade, turned a 58th overall and 79th overall pick into franchise players to go with their high 1st round core. Could you imagine what we would look like if we had Matthews-Marner-Nylander and then pulled a Point & Kucherov out of the 2nd-3rd rounds?

Boston: Continually pulls elite goaltending out of their ass whether it's rando free agents from Finland, from idiot organizations in exchange for failures, or just smart drafting and trading. Elite 1D at 14th overall. Top 3 goal scorer at 25th overall. Super elite super pest for a decade out of the 3rd round

NYR: Spent their 11 million on a guy who scored 120 points this year. Franchise tendie in the 4th round. Jacked a Norris calibre defender from Calgary and a good 2-way #1 centre for pennies from Ottawa.

Carolina: hijacked Pittsburgh for Guentzel at the deadline, took advantage of an idiot front office and turned it into a 21 yr old 30+ goal scorer. Stud shutdown #1 out of the 4th round, always loads their top 4 with quality for decent prices. Always.

Our smartest moves appear to be when we get good complimentary forwards at UFA prices but don't actually light the money on fire. We're 7 years in and it's still the same 5 guys we expect to drag the organization to glory with minimal assistance.

True, Keefe is shit and should have lost his job 5 minutes after losing to the Habs in 2021, but if, at the end of a playoff game, the nicest thing you can say about the play of the league's highest paid player, a player who scored 69 goals this season, is "he was okay" or "he played pretty good" all the coaching in the world won't help. Pretty good ain't good enough at this time of year, especially from that man.

Sooner or later, MLSE will have to accept the objective reality that the core 4 or 5 isn't going to win anything and needs to get busted up. I would start by getting rid of Tavares but he's untradeable. Ergo, I would look to move Marner, who had a grand total of 2 shots on goal last night and doesn't seem interested in doing anything but rationalizing in the post game pressers. Stop saying "we need to do this" or "we need to do that" after every game where you didn't and just fucking do it, already.

I guess rules working differently for us and rags, 3-rd goal was flash back from our series vs Tampa

Yeah— turning on the “playoff mode” switch should not induce panic attacks.
