I am guessing that a million Americans didn't die of a "common cold" during any 12 month period in history.
We all know someone who was either very sick or died of said "common cold"
I know of both.

I don't think it's this black and white, unfortunately.
I mean I'm obviously not a historian or sociologist or anything, but I don't really see a path forward that does not involve either civil war, or a slow, steady, depressing collapse of America is the world's foremost military power and top economy
